I May Have errored!
« on: 21 Jun 2013, 01:13 am »
I posted about a Blu-ray concert disc, being Hi-Rez. But my DAC upscaler indicates a 48k sample rate even though my TV indicates 96 khz sample rate. So it maybe that I'm just hearing 48k upscaled to 192 K.

I'm assuming that this maybe a copy protection scheme on Blu-ray disc limiting output of Hi-Rez to 48k.

Can anybody confirm that they are truly getting Hi-Rez content from Blu-rays, and that we are not getting shafted by Copy Protection laws? :rules:

??    You are asking two questions Mag.  BluRay supports 24/192 in 8 channels for gosh sakes!  Of course it supports hirez.  I have dozens of wonderful hirez BluRays from labels like 2L.  Hirez PCM at its best.

However, that doesn't prove that your SPECIFIC concert isn't 48k.  Maybe it is; there are plenty of good ole DVD concerts that were transcribed over to BluRay.

Yes, but other than your TV display how do you know that the Blu-ray's output is higher than 48k sample?

As for my concert Blu-ray I haven't heard the articulate bass I'm getting from any 48k dvd concert, but that's usually 16 bit. :smoke:

My DAC tells me what sample rate, as does the packaging of the BluRay.  It is not a conspiracy, Mag.  BluRay audio is very hirez....really.

Does the output have to be HDMI or you won't get the HiRez channels with a Blu-Ray disk?

My OPPO BDP-103 manual states:

Due to bandwidth limitations, high resolution audio formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby
TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio cannot be sent through the
coaxial or optical digital audio output. A reduced resolution version of the same audio track
will be output instead. To listen to high resolution audio formats in their best quality, please
use the HDMI connection...

This sounds like an HT setup issue Mag.  I may send this thread to home theater.   Bl;uRay audio is limited to 48k via coax/toslink.  HDMI is the vehicle for BD codecs like TrueHD or DTS HD MA.  Linear PCM (like for bluray audio to your DAC)  is available via coax/toslink, and can be 24/192k too, but you need to rip it first (or de-embed it from HDMi like my thread from June 2010).

The RCA outputs on the Blu-Ray player may be hirez, but then you are stuck with the internal DAC. I have no idea how to find out if they are.

Analog from a bluray can be very good (and yes, the internal DACS would have done their conversion) from something lik an Oppo 105...but other than that, realize the only real way to hear BluRay in its purest hirez form is to rip it (or have a top notch HDMI processor that does a good job on 24/192).
