Sold my BP26p will purchase a BP17

Other than the balanced inputs

Is there any sonic difference between the 26 and 17 that is very noticeable

Sold the 26p to upgrade to McIntosh C220,I find that the solid state is more for me so will try the 17

Any feedback will be great

I have a BP-17.  I had a BP-25 previously.

First of all, I bought the BP-17 for it's convenience.  You can operate everything with the remote.

It has 6db of gain which I believe is less than the BP-25.  I changed the input on my 4BSST2 from 2V to 1V and that works better.

Sonically, I cannot fault the BP-17 at all.  It's difficult to compare it to the BP-25 because I've made some cabling upgrades since the switch but I am completely happy with the 17 and have no interest in a BP-26 or anything else.  I cannot say if balanced inputs would make a difference.  I've compared the headphone output between the 17 and the 25 and I much prefer the 17.  I've also compared the 17 with the BHA-1 used as a preamp.  In this case the BHA-1 was being fed directly from the BDA-2 using Cardas balanced cables and it didn't take long to decide that I preferred the 17.

I have Magnepan 1.7's which haven't much of a bottom end.  It's possible that the BP-26 with the big power supply might do better in the bass...I doubt it.

Even if the 17 had balanced inputs it would make no difference to me since I use the balanced output from the BDA-2 for my headphone amp.

I have no buyer's remorse concerning the 17.  I'd buy it again in a NY minute.

Why the switch from a BP26P to a BP17?

I believe he switched to a Mac but wants to go back to Bryston.  The BP-17 is more than $1,100 cheaper than the 26 with power supply and it offers the ability to remotely control everything, not just power and gain.  It also has newer technology and uses the exact same phono card as the BP-26.

What it lacks is balanced inputs and a heftier power supply(?).  Why not consider the BP-17?

I sure wish Bryston would develop a full featured preamp with lots of balanced inputs/outputs, full remote control of all functions and pass through.  I sold my BP-26 because of the lack of those features and replaced with another brand.  The rest of my system is Bryston.  I'll probably be back to Bryston pre-amp if that BP-30 shows up.   :)

What are the chances of the bp17 coming out with balanced inputs. This to me would be a deal maker. Thanks

Adding to that, I'd like another balanced output from the BDA-2 and most of all, remote control of the BHA-1 volume control!

The current issue of Audio Advisor had pics of the BP-17 and it HAS balanced outputs.
The configuration is interesting. as all the right inputs outputs on one side.. and all the left inputs and outputs on left.

Yes, it does, see pic below from Bryston's web site:

Balanced inputs?  I'm still hoping Bryston develops a digital preamp and ditches all the analog inputs!   :D

They have, it's called a BDA-2 :green:  BCD-1, MacBook Pro and BDP-2 all go through it, selectable with my remote.  Except when streaming music from another room, my preamp has one input selected all the time.  All it does is provide 6db of gain and volume control.

budcook - If you're just using your preamp as a volume control then clearly you are the perfect candidate for a digital preamp!  Bryston could stick the volume control from the BP17 on the BDA-2 and call it a day.

Actually, I use the preamp for streaming music from iTunes in other rooms and then there is the remote control of volume.  I over simplified my comments a bit.

I've given up any analog other then the streaming.  My wife has a cassette deck that she has plugged into the BP-17 but doesn't use it anymore.

If my BHA-1 had remote control of volume, I could use that in place of the BP-17 although I don't think it sounds as good as the BP-17.

The BDA-2 really is the center of my upstream components and comes pretty close to being a digital preamp.

Bud

I should have said that I've used the USB port on the BDA-2 to stream music from iTunes on my MacBook Pro so it is possible for me to completely eliminate any analog inputs in my system.
