Some new EL34 tubes required
« on: 18 Jun 2013, 04:05 pm »
Looking to change the Electro Harmonix EL34 tubes in the mastersound dueventi amp, currently Ive narrowed my search down to the following;

SED Winged C - seems to be popular at the moment
Tungsol EL 34B
PSVane HiFi series

Another option is to keep the tubes and get rid of the Amprex ECC82 tube and replace it with a PSVane equivelant.

The thing with the EH valves is that they can be slightly thin sounding, I just feel that there is somehting a bit better out there for not much outlay. A fellow friend of mine in the USA has the same amp as me and swears by the SED's as does the distributor of Jolida in the UK, they have both replaced EH EL34 tubes

Any help much appreciated

I settled on the SED Wing C after trying several brands with my modified Jolida 302 integrated.  I had majors issues with EH 6CA7s since three of them blew up in a span of two weeks.  Several of my friends had the same problem with that tube.  This happened a couple of years ago, so maybe the production batch had bad quality control.  The Wing C has the best mid-range and overall tonal balance than any other brand I'v tried.  A word of caution though, I'm referring to the original Wing C.  My quad is from the late 1990s.  I also have two quads manufactured within the past four years and they don't sound as good.

Winged C are very good, but I like the Gold Lion KT77 reissues better.

I haven't tried the  winged C's myself but the guy I  purchased my  Jolida 302 from said he  tried some ( very recent production) and didn't feel  they were  an improvement over the Shuguang EL34-B which are far less  $$.
I am using  the Shuguang 34-B's now and    as I put more hours onthem,  they  are   sounding very good.

I'd imagine  that the Psvane HiFi EL34-B's would be similar to the  Shuguang EL34-B given the Shuguang/Psvane connection  but again , the Psvane  are quite a bit more $$

I've heard good things about  both the  GL  KT77 and JJ KT77 reissues (adide from the early QC issues JJ had)

Shuguang or Valve Art EL34B has been a workhorse for me. Never had an issue. I also like JJ KT77 from a sound perspective but have had issues with thin pins and bias problems. The old Svetlanas are wonderful if you can find 'em.

For new issue EL34, I prefer Winged C for vocal or Mullard re-issue for allround music.

If you can spend a little more money get some Siemens/RFT EL34s.  They aren't priced as high as NOS Mullards, thankfully, and sound far better than any other current-production EL34 out there.
