Interesting article in the Times (June 9th). Seems like vinyl business is on the up and really up.

Quote
About a dozen pressing plants have sprouted up in the United States, along with the few that survived from the first vinyl era, and they say business is so brisk that they are working to capacity. Thomas Bernich, who started Brooklyn Phono in 2000, says his company makes about 440,000 LPs a year, but a giant like Rainbo Records, in Canoga Park, Calif., turns out 6 million to 7.2 million, said Steve Sheldon, its general manager.

There are other measures of the health of the field, including figures from ancillary businesses. Heinz Lichtenegger, whose Vienna-based Audio Tuning company produces the highly regarded Pro-Ject turntable, said in an e-mail that his company sells 8,000 turntables a month. And Mr. Fremer has sold 16,000 copies of a DVD, “21st Century Vinyl,” that shows users how to set up several turntable model
8000 tables a month? Incredible.

Hey!

Hmmm... I spent 4 hours listening to music on TT and LPs, and was reading that while listening. Surprising. But that is good news... more old and new musics on vinyl. But also I noticed for sometime now that used vinyl have gone up in price also.

One thing that I wish the article touch on a bit is the issue of master used for cutting vinyl. I'm sure those younger vinyl buyer will be surprised that some of album were cut from digitized analog master tape.

Anyway, good news for all of us who like vinyl  :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Get ye gone young vinyl lovers. Ye are driving up the price of used vinyl and reducing my pension fund with inflated record prices. Back to your earbuds, damn you!

Ya, used prices of early pressings are going up   Good luck on those early UK pressings.
But, hopefully new pressings/repressings will come down a bit.  $15-25  :thumb: $30-40

I hear about more collage age newbies than parent age newbies.  Time will tell if these collage kids will cary through and seek better hi-fi equipment as they enter the workforce.

I bought my 16 year old daughter a vintage turntable (thanks Pumpkin Man) and receiver for Christmas this year at her request. She's got about 100 records in her "collection" now, and 2 boxes of uncleaned, unchecked records in the garage that she needs to go through and decide what she wants to keep (I've already had my pick through them - shhhh, don't tell her).

Of course in all these articles, they forget to mention that most "vinyl" these days is produced from a digital master. Sort of ironic.

I'd love to see more new stuff come out on vinyl. My family had one of these when I was a child. Glad I'm back to the dark side again.
Fun Times  :D

Just wait; cassette sales are up too, and may yet surpass LP sales (again)...

Hi all Audio Circle members.
8000 turntables a month and that's only one turntable manufacturer.
How many turntable manufacturers are they in the world.
I would like to see more statistics on that subject.
I'm glad to see that turntables are not dead.

Will the recording still sound better than CD? Same?

Understanding that quality of a system being equal.

Hey!

I'm pretty sure some of them will find their way to better hi-fi and maybe even hi-end equipments. Let's hope they don't destroy those LPs with their current lo-fi system before that

Hey!

I saw that Symbol Audio console at NY Audio Show this year....

Yes,  in deed that's a quality Pro-ject turntable. I was taking pictures and a nice younger guy... he reminded me of those Hipsters I see around downtown SoHo. While the music was playing I talked to him.I asked him about the price, he answered.... I heard $6000, I replied... not bad and jokingly asked if the beaver come with it too.   I told him I like the design, nice choice of using EL84... from Vista Audio by the way....  and a sub in the steel beam leg is a nice touch.

Not until I got home loaded up pictures on to my Flickr, I did a little research and it turn out that the thing actually cost $26,000!!!!!  :o Man! That's more than my system! And for that price you can build a world class system.

You've got to be a rich Hipster to afford one I guess.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Looks like the speakers are from Omega, Alnico 6's or 8's.

Did someone say cassette sales are up?
Wouldn't quality blank tapes be good!

This week's audio purchases:
a used copy of Aqualung, vinyl of course and
a Carver cassette deck (shipping costs only from a generous member).

That console is kinda  8) for $6000 especially with the tubes, but for $26000.00 :nono:.
I bet for a lot of folks a console like that where they could just push up against a wall and be done would probably be a big seller especially if some company out there started producing them for around $4000. Yeah, they’d be cheap but would probably sell like hotcakes, and they got tubes  :o. Put a big screen over top of it and there ya go. All done.
