hook up wire question
« on: 3 Jun 2013, 02:34 pm »
I want to make a replacement DC cable for my KingRex 12V power supply that is being used to power my Exasound E20 DAC. The current cable is 18g. What do you guys recommend for hookup wire? The cable is going to be about 2' with an XLR jack on one end and a 5mm DC connector into the DAC. I'd like to get silver wire but it's so darn expensive. The VHAudio silver is $25.00 a foot...

thanks
Tony

If you're willing to insulate it yourself, Handmade electronics has 20GA solid silver for $3.25/ft and they charge $0.26/ft for Teflon tubing.

I was just on their site - do you think 20g would be sufficient? the Exa only uses 1.6a max.

thanks Mike!

20GA CU wire is rated for 7.5A when enclosed and 11A in free air, so it will have no trouble with the e20. I noticed the back of the e20 says .8A, so if that is the average, then you have almost a 10X safety factor. :)

OCC copper is better than silver imo. Neotech 18g OCC copper w/ teflon insulation is $3/ft. But it's PS wire for DC, you could use 18g mil spec wire at $0.20/ft...

Tony,

I can't speak from personal, specific experience on this, but the late, great Bob Crump recommended silver plated wire, specifically for dc power. He also commented that it took forever for it to break in. Please note his comments on the requisite rectifier quality to make everything gel.

Don't you need two wires? One for Plus and one for Minus dressed close to each other.

I would use 18-20 gauge mil spec silver plated copper with teflon insulation.  If you want something more special than that, use the same mil spec wire, but get it from someone who cryo treats it, still should be relatively affordable.  I do not like to use any wire which is bare copper, because it corrodes in seconds in an oxygen environment, and even insulted copper wire tends to corrode fairly quickly under the insulation!  The silver plate protects the copper (silver will oxidize as well, but silver oxide still conducts well, unlike copper oxide), solders really well, and makes great connections with pressure as well (crimps and screw terminals).  Alternatively I would use Cardas litz, but I generally reserve that for AC use.
Likely your biggest gains will come from making the umbilical as short as possible, DC does not like to travel very far, and twist the +/-(G) leads for good measure against noise pickup.

thanks for all the suggestions. I went with Mike G.'s recommendation and have been enjoying the cable for the last few weeks. I kept the cable short at about 14" with a twist of the 2 wires. It took many hours for things to smooth out but now it sounds very good IMO - I put the stock cable back in just to compare and there was a noticeable degradation in soundstage width/depth, refinement of the upper end and bass definition. The Kingrex PS MKII and silver DC cable are an excellent upgrade for the E20.
