The new Schiit Lyr has arrived
« on: 2 Jun 2013, 12:37 am »

My new Schiit Lyr has arrived and is up and running.  Dynamics and soundstage (what the Lyr delivers) is what my Beyer T1's were screaming for.  It's only the first night with the Lyr but more to follow.

Curious what tubes you chose as stock? I picked up a used Lyr a couple weeks back that came with an assortment of tubes, most of which were microphonic so I purchased the three different sets of tubes that Schiit offers to run in the amp and right now I have the GE's which seem pretty good but to be perfectly honest I did not really hear a noticeable difference with any of them. Although the JJ's were dead silent while the other two NOS sets are faintly microphonic

Hi all Audio Circle members.
The tubes of the Schiit Lyr/Valhalla being inside aluminum housing should help eliminate the microphonic vibrations that come from where?
Or is it the built in transformer that transmits the vibrations that generate microphonic vibrations?
I can understand that big speakers near the tubes can transmit vibrations, but with hearphones ? ? ?

I've tried a bunch of different tubes, I already had some compatible tubes lying around, and have bought a bunch more to try.

Current favs are Philips ECC85's.

Also tried some Bugle boys and Orange Globes among others.  The OG's are pretty good, but the ECC85's have more "magic".

I personally just do not like microphonic tubes, not that I can hear extra noises coming from them.

If you can find some NOS " Voshkod Rockets", they are inexpensive and
have a very nice, balanced sound.   I had a bunch from the '60's when I had my Lyr.
They take a little while to burn in...but settle in nicely.

If I have any laying around, I'd be willing to get a pair to you for the
cost of shipping.
best,
Hibuck....

Tube Complement for the Lyr:  ECC88 or 6BZ7 dual triode, 1 per channel (rollable to all 6922/6DJ8/ECC88/6BZ7 types and similar)

Hey Hibuckhobby, if you want to part with NOS tubes I'll take them.  Do the tubes have to be matched for the Lyr?

They are reasonably close.  You may like them...you might not...but hey, for just a couple
bucks shipping, it's a cheap experiment.  Shoot me a PM with your shipping info. and I'll
get them out in the next week or so.

Still waiting on the NOS tubes. The Lyr is so much above what I thought it would be.  The Lyr offers all the headroom my headphones want.  When looking for coal I found a diamond in the Lyr.

I own the Beyer T1's, Beyer DT 990's 600 Ohm, the Grado RS1i's.  The Senn HD 800 are next, trust me.  The Lyr (if you are a headphone lover) will become your next best friend.  The dynamics this amp gives you is something one has to experience. I have the Valhalla also (it's on loan) but the Valhalla can't match the Lyr. In a way I miss the Valhalla's pure tube brilliance but the Lyr is here to stay.

Even though I don't own any Schitt, I love hearing all the positive reviews. I have a lot of respect for those guys for finding a way to create a product line here in the USA that provides such solid value without having costs prevent them from being competitive. I also love those Mini-Schitt products they have...that little dac and amp. I may pick those up at some point just cause they're so damn cool!
