To DAC or not to DAC.... Maybe some mods.
« on: 14 Jul 2004, 08:55 pm »
Been thinking about either getting a new DAC and/or having my Pioneer Elite DV-45A modded.   Specifically  looking at the Modwright Basic mods for 2-ch and multi-ch (< $1k).

Also considering a decent DAC (Bel Canto, Scott Nixon, etc.)  I haven't researched this too much - thought I'd try to get some input first.

I can probably only do one upgrade at this time and was looking to see what everyone thought would be most worthwhile - the most bang for the buck.   I'm assuming that my mods won't negate the need for a good DAC (or vice-versa).  If so, please let me know - I'm definitely not an expert at any of this (and it's probably a few months away, which is why I haven't spoken to Dan at Modwright yet).

I'm just looking for better sound.  Specifically extended highs, and tighter bass.  Plus I've got a small bit of midrange glare (sibilance) that I'd like to go away.

Any thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks everyone in advance.

Have you thought about new speakers?

Actually I have considered new speakers,  but I like the general qualities of the B&W N805's - they are very open, and they disappear in the room sonically, and blend great with my sub.  They truly don't have that boxy sound that many speakers do.

Since all of my listening is from CD's (including DVD's, DVD-A, and SACD) I thought it would be worthwhile to do something with the front end.  I keep reading how important the source components are - it's finally  making sense that the front end should be as good as possible.  I think my CD source (and possibly my Denon reciever) are my weakest links in the chain - I'm fairly happy with my speakers and my Odyssey amp.

FYI, I've also considered getting a dedicated CD player, possible with upsampling etc., but that starts getting pricey quickly.   I'm open to suggestions though, if this may be a better way to go....
