Might start looking for a Blue Ray player that plays CD and maybe SACD very well. A universal player that is very good on the two channel audio side..

Here are some that I heard/read are good;

1 Oppo (Models? BDP 95, BDP 103 or 105)
2 Yamaha BD A1000
3 Denon (Models? DVD 3800, DBP 2010CI, DBP A100)

Other suggestions? Maybe one that you own that sounds superb. Don't want to go over $1200 budget. New or used

  • Remember, you don't have to rewind the Blu-ray.

I can only vouch for the Denon DVD-3800 which I still use for my Blu-ray player, it plays CD's pretty good but does an outstanding job on Blu-ray music but doesn't play SACD at all. A real sleeper that you may want to consider and might be hard to find is the Denon DCD-A100 SACD player. One of the advantages this player offers, it has an external input and output (SPDIF and Optical). But it doesn't output DSD for surround. I took the chance on this based on how good the 3800 sounded on Blu-ray music and was really surprised with how good it sounds. I've just recently started using the SPDIF input from a music sever I've built and it blows my mind how good this player is. The down side is it will only accept LPCM on the inputs so no DSD from the server. Anyway just a thought and suggestion.

I myself have been in the market for a media center router for my system, so far only the Oppo-105 looks to fit the bill for now.

But Bryston is working on a Optical Player that will work with their BDP and BDA that I’m following, if they make it output Blu-ray over HDMI I will be going with that package.

Have to wait and see.

It's hard to go wrong with Oppo for a universal player. I've had a BDP-83SE since it came out and I love it for CDs, DVD-Audio & SACDs. It's a pretty decent BDP, as well.

I've heard the Oppo 105 and it is good at all formats and also good as a DAC. I'm moving to all digital and already have a Meitner DAC and an HAL MS-2 music server but I'm eventually going to get a 105 in a system somewhere. I have a 93 and a modded 83, in addition to an old DV980H. I'm also using a Marantz DV9600 universal as a CD transport for the few times I spin discs.

The nice thing about the 105, in addition to the fact it does a really nice job spinning all formats is that you can do DSD files and it has a DAC. I have not heard the 24/96 it will do over coax but the 24/192 the DAC does via USB sounds wonderful.

I've got an Oppo 105, and it seems to play most discs flawlessly.  I'm not that enamored with it's other features though.  Getting blasted with white noise when listening via usb isn't fun, and I've had some issues with it picking up digital from other sources too.  There was a firmware fix for that, but still waiting on the white noise issue.  It's a great disc player, but as a media center it's a work in progress IMO.
