Real traps vs others
« on: 23 May 2013, 12:30 am »
Hi,
i have been checking on realtraps.com and i noticed that they are substantially more espensive then some of the competation out there like atc and acosutimac.
Now i have  read that their core material are different and offer better absortion specially on bass.
So can some one give a comment?
Thank you

Personally I would buy from either Real Traps or GIK Acoustics.  Both offer great products for absorption and diffusion.

If you feel handy, you can also DIY to save some $$$$.

But what both of these companies do better than the others (IMO) is customer service and helping you with your room.  Both companies will assist you here in this forum before you even buy a product.  Do we see other companies here helping us learn about room acoustics and how to tame our "beasts"?

Make sure when you buy from a company that their products have certified testing of their products.  Then see how much they will help you with product and placement.

Thanks.
Does anyone know the insulation thickness of the mini traps and do they have a gap behind it?

MiniTraps are 3-1/4 inches thick and there is no built-in air gap. However, they can be installed securely with an air gap using our Rigid Mounting kit:

Rigid Mounting

You don't have to buy the post bases from us, they're readily available at Home Depot. This method is ideal because it adds a 3-inch gap, and also holds the trap more securely than wires.

Be very very careful doing business with a co. in New England. Nothing good comes from there. I know. I lived there for a while. :nono:

Well, I wouldn't say nothing good comes from New England - I had really good luck using Pratt & Whitney engines over a couple decades, and they come from Connecticut.  But I was certainly glad to leave New England, myself, 35 years ago, never to go back.

All kidding aside, RealTraps, GIK, Acoustimac, etc. all are fine by me as I think I have some products from each of them.  I do not know anybody with room treatments that will ever go back to untreated rooms.  In fact, that is usually the first thing I notice now in public spaces like restaurants or libraries - how excessively noisy and reverberant so many are.

But to get back to the OP's question - I do not have any specifics on Realtraps vs the other brands.  There was a brand (also from Connecticut IIRC) that was Stereophile recommended a few years ago, now defunct, and their products were sadly deficient.  Little bitty panels of fabric-covered foam or 1/2" fiberboard.  But, as I say, they are now defunct and not to be confused with the firms mentioned here.
