Help!! My Krell KSA 150 is in trouble!
« on: 9 May 2013, 03:04 am »
Hello All,
Any advice or experience appreciated...I turned my system on earlier to let things warm up before sitting down to listen. I hit play on my transport and no sound...I noticed the led on my amp was not lit, so I thought maybe I forgot to turn it on. So, I power it up and I hear a loud "crackling" noise from the left channel and the amp turns it self off after about 30 -45 seconds. I power everything down and wait a few minutes...power on and the same thing happens but this time i smell that  electrical smell and a wisp of smoke is rising out of the top of the amp....

Oh snap that's not good. The Medic's will be here soon, I'm just an intern in electrical diagnosis. I'm hoping for the best, that's a nice amp.

The protection circuit kicked in and shut the amp off.  Check all the connections, especially the speaker cables.  The wiff of smoke could be a resistor or a bad capacitor.

On second thought, it is too nice of an amp and you should have it checked out by a qualified tech.

Hope it is something minor.

Thanks. I realize that the protection circuit kicked in ...which is good...but the smoke still scares me.... from what I understand these older Krell amps have lots of proprietery parts and I would have to possibly ship it off to them.; at 95 lbs. that will be a drag.

I heard that. Good thing Krell is in the US, otherwise the shipping cost would sky rocket. Good Luck.

PJ:

Try someone local, or go on the Krell Website to see if there isn't a Krell authorized service center close enough to drive it to them.

Thanks, I just googled them and they are about two hours away from me, I'm in the Hudson Valley. And, they are open on Saturdays so I could drive it over and not have to take a day off of work...I'll be giving them a call later. Seems to be a good option....

Thanks for the heads up on that one  :thumb: Sounds like a good company. Hopefully I'll never need them but I book marked them just in case. Shipping my two box preamp to Canada and back for repair is so frig'n expensive. Quoted $750.00 min round trip by Fedex, and UPS, $900.00 for DHL. Ain't nobody got money fo dat.
