A370XLR2 for OB?
« on: 7 May 2013, 04:36 am »
I recall reading that something has been done to the A370PEQ to prepare it for use with multiple SW-12-16s.  Is this accurate?  What is the change?  Is that change available on the A370XLR2 or the HX800XLR3?  I am planning an open baffle (probably a pair of 16 ohm drivers), but also want the XLR inputs.

The servo board needs to change to add the 6db/oct shelving circuit. There is a conversion charge for it. H800XLR3 has two 400WRMS modules. So it is capable of driving up to 8 SW12-16FR in a mono channel.

So Brian,   you could have a single 800 amp run 4 woofers on right channel and then to an umbilical cord out to another 4 on the left channel.  For those of us trying to save money on one amp only.

Actually you really need to keep the amp as close to the drivers as possible.

Brian can make the 370XLR2 adjusted for the GR12-16FR drivers (he's finishing a pair for me as I type this, right Brian?!). The new 800 amp (400/400) can run a maximum of three of the 16ohm OB drivers per channel, not four (not for power reasons, but because their nominal impedance is actually 12ohms, not 16, and three of them come in at around 4ohms collectively. Right Danny?). The new dual channel amps were made to use in the same speaker cabinet, to drive two of the 4ohm Rythmik drivers---which cannot run off of the same mono channel (two of them present a 2ohm load the the amp, which it is not made to do)---one per channel, not to power left and right cabinets.

Yep, that is correct.

If I had 2 subs placed ~12' apart could I put the amp equidistant between them, or would that still have problems?

You may not note a problem, but the longer the distance you create the less responsive and the slower the corrections will be.

Depending on what the 400/400 ends up being priced at, you might be better off just getting a pair of the 370 amps, and putting one in each side's box. The 370 has plenty of power for two or three GR drivers (and only 30w less per channel with two 370's rather than one 400/400), and will drive the same number of GR12-16FR's. The 400/400 was designed specifically to power two drivers IN ONE CABINET (there used to be an 8ohm version of the GR12---I discovered Rythmik and GR just in time to missout on being able to get four of them---which allowed you to run two of them off of a single 370), even more specifically the two Rythmik 15's in Brian's F25 subwoofer.

Although HX800 has two 400WRMS modules, it is still a mono amp.  All inputs are summed internal together.

HX800XLR2 is designed for customers want to driver many drivers with a single amp on a mono channel.  For instance, if anyone wants to build a 8 drivers per channel OB (or even IB) sub, HX800XLR2 can do that. HX800 also can be used to build a sub with two opposing drivers.

Or, with the new amp, a person could run six GR12-16FR's per side! Each side powered by it's own HX800, of course.
