Americana, what does that mean to you?

I have trouble with this classification. I'm not sure what it really means. I probably would include The Band, Maria Muldaur, Willie Nelson, Carolina Chocolate Drops and any Country music I can tolerate. I'm curious what it means to you.

Thanks,
Doc

I just realized I might have chosen the wrong circle. Please feel free to move it.

I'll go with "any country music I can tolerate." That usually means older tunes and performers--although I recently attended a live performance with Doug and Talisha that was promoted as Americana and actually lived up to the marketing.

They played mostly older folk tunes. Great event.

Contemporary country does nothing for me. It's so unauthentic.

According to Wikipedia:
Quote
Americana is an amalgam of roots musics formed by the confluence of the shared and varied traditions that make up the American musical ethos; specifically those sounds that are merged from folk, country, blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll and other external influential styles such as bluegrass. Americana, as defined by the Americana Music Association (AMA), is "contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots-oriented sound that lives in a world apart from the pure forms of the genres upon which it may draw. While acoustic instruments are often present and vital, Americana also often uses a full electric band."

For me, it is hard to define, but I know it when I hear it 8)

Americana, to me?

Elvis. Don McLean. America. Molly Hatchet. Kiss. Ram Jam. Arlo Guthrie. James McMurty. Country Joe and the Fish. Many, many more.

Speaking of fish, 'Americana' is a pretty broad net.  8)

Hav fun,

Jerry

It means American folk music, but because "folk" music doesn't sound cool, the marketers made up the word Americana.

I'm thinking it could be generational. If you were a teen in the 40's, it may mean Benny Goodman, in the 50's Chuck Berry, etc.

For the last several decades...the Boss comes to mind (Springsteen). Also, perhaps Steve Earle. It all depsnd on taste, I guess?

Good topic.

First time I see this noum apply to music was in the late 90s at Rounder Records magazine, it must be a very nice musical genre.
They had various south US artirts classified as americana music:
http://www.rounder.com/?s=americana

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americana_%28music%29

As in english language there is no distinction of male and female in certain situations, this feminine substantive ending with ''a'' may come from Mexico.

Americans don't need grammar to know the difference between a he and a she.
