Square motor record clamp
« on: 26 Apr 2013, 12:08 pm »
Seeing as how Stanalogue is no more, are there any larger record clamps that will work with the old square motor table?
Mine has the little dinky one and I'd like to get something larger.
Thanks.

I'm fairly sure the Basis Reflex Clamp will work. It simply clamps to the smooth spindle surface. I'm not sure if it will hold pressing the record into the plater concave though.

While the Stillpoints might be worth a look.

"I'd like to get something larger"
as in heavy or weight or diameter the clamp touches the record label Steve

As in the diameter of the clamping surface.
Basically, I want the clamp from the WT Classic.
I suppose that I could have one machined for me.

Yes, that would work, too.
So, does anyone know if any of the currently available clamps will screw on properly with the early WT tables?

I thought of Threadkiller last week and keep forgetting to mention it.
I changed the Allen out from the large Classic Clamp and used it on the clear platter for the square motor.
Oddly enough, the smaller clamp sounded better with the clear platter - kind of like it was made that way for a reason.
The big clamp sounds better on the Classic - go figure.
I'll bet Mr. Firebaugh spent some time experimenting with clamps to come up with the right combination.

Indeed he did.  Btw, thanks for thinking of me.
And as I always go on about on any forum where it's mentioned, the black damped platter was not, is not, and never will be a Firebaugh design. It came from that evil empire of Transparent Audio, headed by Karen Sumners. Bleh! A pox on them and all they stand for.
Oops, where was I after my mental collapse, oh yes, it does behoove one to use the right clamp on the older models. :)
Cheers! Steve....

When I had my Classic with the square motor & small hold-down clamp, I invested in a Bren1 record clamp. It really worked well on my Classic!

Here's a link... http://www.bren1recordclamp.com Tell them you need it for a Well Tempered & they'll machine a taper in the clamp to fit snugly...

My $0.02,
Pete

I also have the square motor table and have been looking for a Reference Clamp and the Marigo cup clamp

So, is it your opinion that the original, clear platter sounds better than the black damped platter?  I have both, but never actually did a comparison.  I will have to do that now.

Do so and report back...
From what I can gather those that prefer the black have something askew in their system...
