Looking for a new music server.
« on: 18 Apr 2013, 03:56 pm »
Hi Guys:
I'm afraid that my SB3 music server is about ready to die. I'll need a new one and I have no idea what is available to replace the SB3. Any suggestions?

                                                              Thanks

If you have an Iphone and want to go the low budget route you can do what I have done.
Picked up a Pure I-20 Iphone dock. It' got it's own DAC , but I use an external one. Mostly I run the MOG app on my phone and have a very comprehensive library for listening. MOG is  $10 a month and the Pure dock was about $120.

BTW some have stated that the Iphone is not a music server. I use it as one, and my friend has his entire collection of Itunes on his Iphone HD. So it might not be the best sound quality but it works surprisingly well for casual listening IMHO.

I use a netbook via USB out to my DAC and an Ipod touch as the Wifi controller.  I run SqueezeServer and squeeze player app on my netbook then the squeeze player controller on the ipod touch,  It works seamlessly and squeezeplayer plays any kind of music you point it at, internet radio, mp3, flac, streaming services.

There are these two options -
Music Player based on Raspberry and Squeezebox - http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=115988.0

Squeezebox replacement for less than $30! - http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=113075.0

If you already own a PC that could connect to the audio equipment you can install squeezeplay - http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay

You might provide a few more requirements like price range and features you would like to have:

* Computer/USB based solutions (including raspberry pi), just install linux, run MPD or XBMC or do stick with Windows/Mac
* SB competitors:  Airport Express, Apple TV, Roku, Sonos and even blu-ray players and gaming consoles can play back audio. (not to mention your TV might have this feature)
* Full custom players like Olive, sooloos, Bryston BDP and Sim's MIND solutions.

Why not buy another squeezebox second hand?  For the money they seem to be hard to beat, whether as a player using the internal DAC, or as a media streamer feeding a stand-alone dac.  They seem to come up all the time here on AC trading post, often with mod's or power supply upgrades.  I got a duet receiver w/ mods + power supply upgrade all for $200 and I know I'd have to spend at least three times as much to get something that sounds better as a streamer.........

Wow, really?!

I didn't have one until just recently - new job gave me one. Otherwise I haven't had one since sept 2009(last full time job). It's an expense I don't feel is worth it for me.

Whenever I ponder options for a music server, I still find it hard to believe any company would discontinue a successful product like the Squeezebox Touch... just doesn't make any sense to me.

I could not agree more. Somehow I knew when Logitech bought the company, they were done. With a bit of updating and marketing I think they could have boosted sales. What a shame they gave up on a greàt product.
Also the Transporter was an awesome device. I don't know if that product is still being manufactured?

But it could have been the latest, greatest music server for any number of new music venues like Pandora, MOG, Spotify and a PC interface via USB along with it's native feature set.
