Reminder for this weekend's GAS Get Together
« on: 18 Apr 2013, 02:19 am »
Come by either Saturday or Sunday April 20th and 21st and listen to the systems that I have set up.  I have been fine-tuning them for optimum performance.

The location is 1047 Terracewood Circle, Ballwin 63011.  I am near Queeny Park.

The time is from one PM on both days.

I am not good at PM's so call me if you need directions or want to confirm that you are coming.  Feel free to bring friends.

Best, Kent Johnson 636-399-8053

Dear Kent,
I'm sorry but I just can't attend. I had previous commitments to the grandkids. (Three now!) My son, at age 22, is already afflicted with that perversion called audiophilia. Maybe I can cast a similar spell on the grandkids.

Have a wonderful time!

I'll be there Kent.  And if you don't mind, I'll bring that Arte Forma KT88 you heard at the last event.

That will be fine, Pete.  We can set it up in the living room system.  Best, Kent

Kudos to Kent for a very nice day. The Arte Forma KT88 tube rig was driving the Klipsch RBs upstairs, and he had the new Maggies with the Primare amp, Cary preamp, the mysterious esoTeric cd rig, and the Monster power conditioner in the main rig. The secondary rig had the McIntosh integrated and cd player driving the piano gloss black Sony SS m9s, which again were quite delightful.

Liam gave the WII system quite a workout upstairs and says "tell Kent thanks!" All in all, a very relaxing afternoon enjoying some great music.  :thumb:

Kent,

Thanks for your really generous hospitality hosting both Saturday and Sunday.  I really enjoyed our low key group and it was good to meet Roger, Bernie and Gabe & catch up a little with Ken and Mike.
When I walked in the group started on the Sony SSM9SE in what seemed like just a corner of your basement.  They were quite a bit of fun really and I would describe them as plump in juicy.  I mentioned to the group I couldn't believe they worked so well where they were located.  Those two 8" drivers poowered by the McIntosh gear delivered really satisfying bass!  And, being the speaker wh**e that I am I thought they would still be worth seeking out on the used market.  Piano black and in immaculate condition doesn't hurt either.

Switching over to the Magnepans (which has been the main focus of Kent's obsession for as many years as I've known him) showed how greatly the two speakers/systems served up music.  The Magnepans are obviously very different speakers but I was dumbfounded by what Kent was able to accomplish here.  I unfortunately am guilty of plunking down components and speakers and hoping for magic. I know Kent reviews for Positive Feedback and has greater access to some gear but I believe he still passionately pursues other options to see how much more he can eek out of those Maggies.  The 1.7's were held in place with Mye stands.  The soundstaging abilities (lateral spread) and naturalness of tone left me kind of awstruck.  Kent was describing his basement journey with the group and there was a lot of head nodding from other crazed 'philes.  The Cary pre and monstrous Primare A32 beast seemed to be a great pairing.  Kent- thank you for a terrific day and I would love to come back over and spend a few hours picking through your wall of music.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to come by and listen to my systems.  I hope you found them interesting and maybe enjoyable. If you couldn't get by, give me a call and we can find a time to do some listening.  I will have the Arte Forma tube integrated for a while if anyone would like to hear it.

Again, thanks to everyone who spent some time listening.

Kent

Kent, sorry I missed you last weekend.  I came down with a bad chest cold, and couldn't stop coughing.  I didn't want to cough through your demos and / or make everyone else sick.

Hope it went well......I'd still love to hear those Maggie's someday.

Cheers, Don Bingaman
