Development of MC1/MC2
« on: 17 Apr 2013, 01:20 pm »
Does anyone know if Magnepan is working of new replacement of these models? they are a few years old now. Thinking they might be working on a new ribbon design to better match the .7 models.
Anyone heard or knows something?

I haven't heard anything about a new model, which doesn't mean anything, of course.

By the way, they just announced a new promotion for people who heard and liked the 3.7 but have WAF problems, free tickets to hear the MMC-2 at the factory:

Wendell says they're getting results from this combo that are comparable overall to the 3.7, for about the same price.

Fly and Try Program, even.

Would you like a pair of 3.7s…

…But, the "Interior Designer" says "No"?

We have a bold claim to make—You can have the sound of 3.7s with a system that is approved by interior designers. And we have the money to back our claim. If you are serious, we'll fly you to Minnesota to prove it.

For the same price of a pair of 3.7s and a CC 5 center channel, you can have the sound of 3.7s plus multi-channel/home theater with a system that is approved by interior designers.

You are an audiophile and have every right to be skeptical. Your dealer has limited space without the means to display all of our products. So, your first step will be spending some time listening to the 3.7s at your dealer. If this is the sound you have dreamed of owning, but won't fit in your home, the next step is seeing and hearing how this can be duplicated with a free round-trip ticket to Magnepan. In some parts of the country, you can be back home on the same day.

Email us a 360 degree photo tour of your room along with your phone number. Our technical people have over 40 years of experience with Maggies and can determine if this system will equal the performance of 3.7s in your room. Then, in cooperation with your dealer, and if it is a good fit for your room, we'll pay for a free round trip ticket to visit Magnepan and see and hear for yourself. We are betting that the sound of our MMC 2 system will equal the sound of 3.7s at your dealer.

Just that in this review:
http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/magnepan/mmgw_2.html

This was written:
" I have it on excellent authority that Magnepan is working on a version of the MC1 using (are you ready for this?) their true ribbon tweeter."

Not sure when this review was done though. Anyone that knows about this?

It says smaller than a 3.6 so it's been a few years at least.

Magnepan ought to know something about it - here's what their website says:
What is an MMC 2?

The MMC 2 is NOT an MC 1 with a motor. The MMC 2 is a 3-way speaker with a new design concept for a planar midrange, plus a quasi-ribbon tweeter and quasi-ribbon super-tweeter. Sonically, the MMC 2 is related to the venerate Magneplanar MG 3 series.

So, there's no true ribbon in that speaker (apparently, the authority on which the 6moons article placed its confidence was misinformed). The fact of the matter is that that arrangement is similar to a 1.7 (all QR), not a 3-series. There is a timbral difference between the true and quasi ribbons, but the supertweeter results in rather similar imaging qualities.
