Klyne 6PE phono stage: opinions ?
« on: 2 Apr 2013, 05:04 pm »
Hi all,
I may have the chance to purchase a used Klyne 6PE phono stage, but I cannot audition it before buying.
I'm interested in it due to Klyne's very good reputation, and the only time I could listen to a Klyne preamp (series 5, don't know exactly which model) it sounded very good, but it was a quite brief listening and in a half unknown setup (half = the power ampo was my ARC 100.2 itself !).

So... er... how does it sound ? I mean: how would you describe its sound ?
Some say Klynes are "tubey" and that would be very good if it means "not harsh", but I don't want roll off or excessive warmth or "fascinating colour": I want neautrality, timbrical correctness, dynamics, details, frequency extension, bass definition... well, at least a good share of them.
What do you think about it ?

moreover: is the series 6 superior than 5 or is it the entry level ?

thanks, ciao
daniele

The Klyne 6 series (don't remember the model number) is not a "tubey" sounding preamp, if by tubey you mean full bodied, warm and lush. It is, in the best sense, clean but not analytical, smooth and relaxed but not vague and boring. It lacks the palpability that some tubed preamps have. It was the lone solid state preamp I considered buying, but wanted the flesh in the room experience that tubes provide. After more than 20 years with high quality tube preamps, I'm back thinking about a Klyne. The 5, I believe, is the predecessor to the 6 series. What you're looking for in your description seems to be what the Klyne has.
