What do you think of PSB Stratus speakers?
« on: 27 Mar 2013, 02:40 pm »
I recently picked up a pair of the original PSB Stratus tower speakers and wonder if anyone else owns a pair or has heard these speakers and what people think of them.

I had never heard of PSB speakers prior to purchasing them. I bought them because I was highly recommended to do so by some knowledgeable audio friends and because it was also too good of a deal to pass up.

The original PSB Stratus is the precursor to the more-well known Stratus Gold speaker.
The original Sratus model is a two-way design.

I could not find a lot of info online about the original Stratus speakers (lots of stuff, though, on the Stratus Golds).

I have had the speakers for about a week now and really love them. The sound is very open and neutral and detailed, lively as well with plenty of bass. I am glad I picked up the speakers.

What do others think of PSB Stratus speakers?
Also, what is the main difference between the Stratus and Stratus Gold speakers (I know the original Stratus is a two-way design and the Stratus Gold is a 3-way design) in terms of sound?
Just wondering at some point if it would be worth it to step up to the Stratus Golds.

Thank you.

My limited exposure to PSB speakers left a really positive impression.
Perhaps some PSB owners can answer your questions.

I really don't know anything about the original Stratus line but  PSB had three versions of later Status speakers--the Gold, the Stratus and the Mini. The next change was the Gold i , Stratus i  ( which I have ) and I believe the New Mini or something like that.

The i versions were very well reviewed ( Stereophile, Audio etc. )  . PSB is now owned by NAD ( both Canadian companies ) and continues to make very well received loudspeakers that are reviewed by numerous magazines.

You could ask a question on Canuck Audio Mart ( CAM ) and would likely get more information.

I see where now they're registered in Ontario, not the UK as in days of yore.
(they generally made affordable and enjoyable equipment. Hopefully that hasn't changed!

That's correct. They're part on the Lenbrook group out of Ontario

Thanks. After the original Stratus model, PSB created the PSB Stratus Bronze, Silver and Gold models. There is a lot of info on the Stratus Golds online and that model gets incredible reviews. There is not much ino online about the original Stratus model but I can tell you that they are superb speakers - very detailed, open and transparent. The clarity of sound is amazing and the bass is excellent as well. The only negative thing (and it is a minor issue) about them that I have found is that the binding posts are actually located on the bottom of each speaker, in the wooden base, and it is a pain to connect speaker wires to them as one has to literally pick up the speakers and place them on their sides in order to access the binding posts. But, other than that minor issue, they are excellent speakers and I am very pleased with the sound and quality of them. I highly recommend them!
