JRiver & Benchmark DAC2 Setup Help
« on: 25 Mar 2013, 05:35 pm »
Just got a DAC2 on home demo, installed the USB driver and imported my SACD ISO's into JRiver 18, however I get an error message stating that I may be missing "direct show filters" when I try to playback any DSD files

Any pointers to what Audio output settings I should be using ie WASAPI or AISIO?

Any help would be appreciated  :thumb:

Thanks for that, looks like its a bug with my build of JRiver that's causing the issue, can't get Foobar working though as we'll

I'm relatively new to this too.  Got JRiver working with the music server and messed up Foobar.  Busy with lots of non-audio things and also finishing extracting ISO files from SACDs so have not got it it yet.  I do have both JRiver and Foobar running on the PC with an M-Audio 192 card.

JRIver SACD ISO playback doe not require any DirectShow plugins, etc...it's native for DSD-capable DACs like I assume the DAC2 is.   My Meitner and Mytek (both stereo and stacked for multichannel) play back ISOs fine.  As you stated, it's likely an install issue or bug with DAC2 (not a JRiver general bug cuz I can play them fine).  That being said, ISOs are a pain in the ass, have minimal tagging, usually sketchy cover art, and can be a cpu issue (like my minimalist CAPS) if DST compressed.  I'd recommend, even for you demo listening, to extract to DSF.

As for ASIO vs WASAPI, there is no good answer..it is entirely DAC/driver specific.  For my Meitner I cannot use ASIo, so I choose between WASAPI-Event Style and Kernel Streaming.  For the Mytek I love its ASIO driver (although can do WASAPI-Event) and love that the ASIO driver allows DSD128 playback as well.

Thanks for the helpful reply  :thumb:

I  assume I start from Section 5 of your PDF?  :thumb:

Section 5 – Extracting DSF or DFF files from your ISOs

SACD-extract.exe will extract the individual DSD files from your ISO files, so they can be played by a
DAC. This conversion process runs entirely on your PC (or OSX, using scripts, see appendix

I'd follow Ted's advise and do the DSF.  I'm in process of re-extracting.  Much easier to tag.  I have most of the ISO files (like 98-99% - one can lose track with so many files) and while it takes time, I've been doing it in batches as Ted recommended.  It is so much easier and the tags stay put.  I'm doing the work on the PC as it is easier to just take the hard drive out of the music server and then put it back when I'm done.

I don't know if this will resolve anything or not but what do you have as settings on sampling rate?

If you want to play DSD over the USB you have enable it in JRiver
