Bryston 6BSST2 + 4BSST2 Question
« on: 25 Mar 2013, 12:25 am »
This should be a pretty simple question. Looking to use 6BSST2+4BSST2 to drive my 5 speakers (Triad Platinum LCR for L/R/C+ Triad Gold monitors for surrounds). Just looking for some views on usage.. 4B to drive L/R and 6B to drive center and surrounds or does it even matter? All are 300watts at 80hm.

Also - as for racking, can they be stacked or do I need to compensate for some air flow between the amps? Amps are sitting in inside an equipment room (9x5ft room), sides and back of rack are open.

So There

Addino, your proposed configuration is correct. James T recommended to me that my 4B power the FL/FR, with my 6B powering the C and LB/RB (I use another 4B for the LS/RS). The advantage is just needing to power up the 4B for stereo.

Thanks Rich. I assume it's 6 of 1, half dozen of another since all channels are rated the same.

I would personally want some space between the stacked amplifiers.

Per Bryston's recommendation on ventilation:
The most important installation consideration is ventilation. All SST2 amplifiers are convection cooled. Unrestricted air-flow across its heat sinks is a must. For this reason do not install anything directly above it. Allow at least 3.5 inches (2 rack units of 1.75" each) of space above and 1" to either side of this amplifier. Do not install directly above other heat generating equipment.

Even if you can't accommodate 3.5" separation, a couple of inches would be a heck of a lot better than no space, and I have used a pair of 1" hockey pucks successfully in the past.  The also inexpensive neoprene/cork sandwich vibration pads also work well, if not quite as aesthetically pleasing.

+1 This is what I do as well, that way if I'm not listening to anything in surround I don't need to turn on the 6B. When I do I just trigger the 6B and voila on she comes.
