Jerome's posts make me sad - I wish I could still tolerate scotch :(

I just had a nice glass of Grenache spanish red wine to go with my talapia and mixed veggies dinner.  Yum!

Old Raj blue label is quite strong at 55% ABV.  But you would never know it judging from the taste of a dry martini made with it.  There is some warmth to it, but not as much as I was expecting.  The complexity of this gin stands up very well to dry vermouth.   The saffron provides some subtle sweetness and earthy tones to the cocktail.  This is a juniper lover's gin and will not win over vodka drinkers.  There isn't as much spice here as Bombay Sapphire.  Old Raj has virtually no citrus tones, but has some nice floral qualities to it.  It is very smooth given its strength and it glides gracefully across the palate.  It suits me.  First impressions tell me that I like it better than Bombay Sapphire, but at $45 for a bottle it's a bit pricey as a go to everyday gin.  Lovey stuff though.

Sorry about that Tyson.  If it's any consolation I plan to sip a few of the aged rums I have in the coming days if the moderate weather holds up.  If we go back to being baked then it will probably be gin and tonics.  Speaking of gin, have you ever tried G'vine Nouaison?  My understanding is that this gin is distilled from grapes so you should be able to tolerate it.  It's one I have been meaning to try myself.

Cheers.

I have not tried it.  A quick search of Argonauts (the local liquor superstore) shows they have both expressions in stock!  I'll definitely check it out, thanks for the tip!

Mount Gay 1703 Barbados aged rum.  It is a vatting of rums aged between 10 and 30 years in American oak barrels.  On the nose it delivers notes of dark molasses and a great deal of spice.  To someone not familiar with aged rums they might mistake Mount Gay 1703 for a high quality rye whiskey.  The rum character comes through with a little more authority on the palate, however.  It's bottled at 43% ABV, though I wish it were a little stronger at 46% ABV.  There is also a little bit of woodiness to go along with the vanilla and spices.  This is an expensive bottle of rum, and it sells for about $109 list.  I bought this one about a year ago for $79.  If you see a bottle at something close to that price I can give it a strong recommendation.  At prices closer to list...I'm not so sure.

My wife and I love the regular Mount Gay rum, specifically because it doesn't have that scotchy taste that something like Myers has. AI also like Appleton and Cruzan (for everyday). My wife likes the slightly sweeter and lighter taste of Castillo gold for everyday.

However, with this heat I've taken to open some NY State (Finger Lakes) Dry Rieslings. The Finger Lakes region in upstate NY is probably the premier region for Rieslings outside of Germany or Austria. The dry rieslings are nice crisp white wines with just a hint of sugar. Not sweet at all like a regular reisling. Perfect when chilled for the recent hot weather and pair well with spicy sea-foods. The wineries I like around Keuka lake are Ravines, Dr Konstantine Frank's, McGregor. Around Seneca lake are Atwater, Zugibe, Wagner. Some of these wineries make relatively decent reds as well, but they tend to be less full bodied than California reds since there is a shorter growing season. Basically, stick to the whites from here.

Got off work too late to make the Liko Sto. Stopped at 7-11 and grabbed some Fat Tire.

Fat Tire, at 7-11 in VA. Fact being stranger than fiction. Or it still seems that way. Though we have had it east for a year or so.
