Help me select my amps
« on: 5 Jul 2004, 09:23 pm »
Hello,

Sorry I'm very new to this and this is my first high end system. I am about 50/50 music/HT. So far I have purchased B&w 802's, 805's, HTM1 and sunfire sig sub. I am going to purchase the bryston 1.7 pre, and need help setting up my amp situation. 5.1 initially (will worry about the other 2 down the road). The room is 23x16 with cathedral ceilings. I had a gear closet built with a mid atlantic rack which currently houses my niles av distribution and the whole house sources. All wiring is in the walls and plumbed to this "closet" it is well ventilated and also has an AC vent in there. I was considering sunfire because of the low heat it produces but after some auditions I realy like the bryston SST amps. Just concerned about the heat they may produce. Any advice greatly appreciated...

You will not be disappointed with the SP1.7 in both HT and 2ch music + 20 years warranty.

I have heard a B&W Nautilus 800 series speakers,  SP1.7, Bryston 4BSST 2x300 and 6BSST 3x300watts and 2xPMC TLE Subs as HT setup.  They connected are via Nordost Valhalla interconnects/speaker cables and Audience modified Sony 999ES as a source.

If you have the money, I would say 3 x 7B SST up front and maybe 4B's for the rear.

BTW, Bryston amps produce very little heat.

Better yet, save a little $$$ and get the same performance from the 14B SST for mains and 7B SST for center.  Those B&W's love the power.

Agree with Fife 3 x 7B SSTs up front and a 4B SST for the rears.  I use 2 x 7B SSTs for B&W Nautilus 800s and a 6B SST for the HTM1 and N803 rears along with a SP1.7.  The Bryston Amps don't get hot as long as you leave a gap between your rack shelves.

802s are quite power-hungry. Either a pair of 7B-SSTs or a single 14B-SST would be ideal for them. But you might be okay with a 4B-SST.

For the HTM-1 and 805s I think high-end amps would be overkill. You could use a 6B-SST if you're feeling extravagant, but a 3-channel 9B-SST, or a 3B-SST plus PowerPac-120 would probably sound as good.

I went with a 4BSST, 6B SST and sp1.7 to power my Onix Rocket 750 speakers in a 5.1 setup.

300 watts all around is truly a pleasure.  The surrounds are alive with action, something was missing previously.  Power.

The Blue Man Group DVD-A or DVD-Video is an outstanding demonstration.
