Which to Update, BDP-1 or BDA-1?
« on: 22 Mar 2013, 05:00 am »
I have both the BDP-1 and the BDA-1 and I've just ordered a BDP-2 replacement for the BDP-1.  However, I am wondering if I would be better off replacing the DBA-1.  I'm not looking so much for more options as I'm looking for better sound.

So my question is simply this... would I have been better off replacing my BDA-1 rather than the BDP-1 if I can only upgrade one?

If USB audio is important to you then I would the BDA-2 would make sense.    I have both the BDA-1 and BDP-1, but based on James' comments, I don't know of a compelling audio reason unless you wanted USB audio for the BDA or perhaps a bit more power for those USB bus powered devices on the BDP.  I'm sure others will chime in about the BDA-1 and BDA-2 as they do have different DACs.

Thanks for the advice, I think the only reason to get the BDA-2 from my perspective is the possibility of better DACs.  Now I'm wondering if I should replace either device.

I'm also considering reaplacing one or the other. I'm leaning towards the BDA-2 for the newer DAC's. I will be able to use it with my BCD-1 along with the BDP-1. I'm hoping for the improvement in sound. I'm waiting to see more post of people who upgraded along with some reviews.

The BDP-2 I ordered isn't scheduled for completion until April 18th.  Bryston told me it's because the source for the sound cards can't keep up with the demand.

I would think the DAC because the BDA-2 allows for 192/24 bit resolution and 32 bit chips.

If you use the BDA-1 hooked to a source via USB, instead of purchasing the BDA-2 you may want to investigate something like this -> http://www.audiophilleo.com/Audiophilleo2.aspx   I have one on the back of my BDA-1 and it works very well.

I don't use a USB source but I need to look into it.  I'm beginning to think that I'll either do nothing or get both.  I've already paid for the BDP-2 that I have on order so I'll complete that deal.

Update: called my dealer and cancelled the order for the BDP-2.  Replaced it with an order for a BDA-2.  Now I feel better :thumb:

The sound is exactly the same to the T as a  BDP-2
The sound card in both units is the same it's the Julia sound card
The only difference between the BDP-1 & BDP-2 is its capacity to play a much larger music library and of course the speed to able to change between units.
I will only upgrade my BDP-1 once Technology will bypass the Julia high-end sound card that Bryston is currently using.
I'm told the Julia is a very High end sound Card. So it looks like 3-5 years down the road.... Bryston will up Grade to a BDP-3
With a New Sound card with all the bells & whistles

So bottom line. The BDP-1 & BDA-2 Combo is the only way to  Go
If you do have a BDA-1 change.it sell it ...  You will not regret it..
The BDA-2 will put a smile on your loved ones !

Thanks for that information.  I'll see about canceling my order for the BDP-2 and ordering a BDA-2.

 :D Hi Robert
I got the BDP-1 ,I am curious, do you happen to know, how large of a music library (Gb)  the BDP-1 can handle compared to the BDP-2 ? Also what do you mean "change between units"?
Thanks
George

I'm away for another month but you convinced me to get a BDA-2 when I return home. Thanks for the advice! :thumb:
