Meet Phil Bamberg Wed. night @ 6pm
« on: 16 Mar 2013, 10:32 pm »
Phil will be back in St. Louis Wednesday, and will be providing some insights into his speaker designs and performance. I think we can start at 6pm, and at some time Phil will be able to step in to answer questions and detail some of the wrinkles that went into this set of Series Fives.

I know I'll be there with bells on. It has been a very enjoyable and fascinating
run, and a marked change from some of the high efficiency speakers that normally cohabit the man cave. :icon_lol: Please pm, email, or phone me if you can attend.

Thanks again for everyone coming to visit and hear these speakers. I have really gained respect for the traits a well designed and engineered system can provide.
Dave

PS - please note Phil will be driving north from Dallas. If plans change I will put the change out at the earliest. And I just noticed I did this on Kent's login rather than mine. That's strange, oy vay!

There, that is better.
And it was me that posted for Wednesday's meet and greet at my house in south county.

It's always better to damn the traffic than dam the traffic, Charlie. You will be most welcome.

Rick and  Sturgus, and maybe a second friend, will be here as well.

Charlie, Rick, Stugus, and friend RSVP'd.

If you have room for 2 more, looks like my co-worker Pete and I could come down for awhile.  We'd both enjoy the opportunity to talk with a fellow speaker designer outside of a show.

Sorry, super host Dave, can't make it afterall.  :(
I was hoping to cuss all the way over in traffic, then be elated by good chat, hifi and cheese.

Sorry I have to bow out. I seemed to have caught some type of bug. Really don't want to pass it on. Hope everyone enjoys the session. Pic's would be nice.

Cool get together!  Any additional comments on how the speakers sounded?

Dave - you have a decent sized room.  What did you think about the bass response of the 5's?

I love my older series 5's but the new ones have several key improvements.  I think they are more open sounding and like the built in bass amplification.

Cheers

Jack

Very solid overall.  To be honest I'm not expecting much when I sit to listen to a dome tweeter, but Phil's use of the Millenium was excellent ... easily exceeded my expectations.  A bit thicker/meatier sound than the RAAL, but even with that sound being so familiar to me, I found the tweeter on the Series 5 to be very satisfying.  Midrange was very resolving and transparent, but just a bit edgy at times - although that could have been compression from overdriving the 25 wpc amp.  They imaged like crazy, nearly completely disappear into the room, and bass was taught and well integrated.

To sum it up, there's a lot to like about the design.  I could name quite a few $20K-$50K speakers that don't sound as good as Phil's much less expensive Series 5.

The real surprise is how the Series 5 steep crossover slopes don't give you that steep crossover slope sound.  They're full, refined, and musical like shallower slopes often are ... but with the precision and control of steeper slopes.  I can only assume that's due to many many years of tweeking by Phil, who obviously has a fine ear.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to make any of the sessions at Dave's.  Sounds like the Bams offer great value for the $$.

Just a quick note thanking everyone for their participation, support, and reviews of the Series 5 speakers.  You are a great bunch of guys that still have plenty of enthusiasm for our hobby.

BTW, would you please provide the name of the cello/organ piece that was demo'd Wednesday night?

Phil

Phil, I will ask Roger. I believe it was one of Albinoni's Cello concertos, maybe adagio in g minor. I can't remember the release, though.

Here is the exact disc, Phil.
