unifield 3 mk 2 upgrade
« on: 13 Mar 2013, 03:10 am »
Just wanted to report on the sound of the upgraded uni 3 mk2.  My  system currently  consists of a modded  bel canto  Dac 3 with bel canto transport/ shindo  Vosne  Romanee  pre  and  Corton  Charlemagne  monos/music hall turntable.  Shindo  interconnects and VSA signature speaker cables.
6 months of  burn in reveals markedly increased neutrality  and purity  of tone.  Transparency  and  realism  are  also  improved with a step up  in  placement  and  front  to  back  layering  of  sound  stage.  They  act  as  transducers,  relating  what is present  on the recording, be it CD or vinyl.  One of  the most pleasant improvements  has been in dynamics, greatly increasing realism.
I think the VSA speaker cables have added tremendously.
Hope this  helps anyone considering the upgrade.  I cannot adequately convey the pleasure  I experience due to the upgrade and speaker cables.

Hi Oneway,

You have an awesome system as listed and I'm sure the sound quality is very fine indeed.

I'm seriously considering the purchase of the Three, however it would be the original model. Are you able to list the actual physical changes that are involved in the upgrade.

Thank you.

Regards,
Dave

Hey Dave,

Albert does a great job of outlining the upgrade, but essentially the ribbon tweeter is changed to an upgraded model, there are changes/modifications to the crossover and the full range driver.  The internal wiring is changed to the delphi wiring found in the VSA speaker cables. And, the binding post are upgraded to the ones found on the VR 9SE.  I just had to purchase the speaker cables to match the internal wiring of the speaker.  I was shocked that this much upgrading only cost 2K(excluding the speaker cables of course).

Hopefully, someone else will chime in if I omitted anything.

oneway, you mention the improvement with the Masterbuit speaker cables.  Are you using the MB interconnects and power cords?  If not, you've got much more opportunity to hear deeper into your music and video audio.  Wait until you try the power cords...

Yes, I would really like to try the entire loom.  My dilemma is that Shindo voices his preamps/amps as a system inc luding the power cords he provides with amps.  I've seen where a couple of reviewers tried different cables without good results.  Maybe Albert will let me try a loaner.

I've heard the MB powercords on several systems and various components in those systems, always with results beyond what was suspected possible.
