Finally finished my Dedicated Room

I am very happy to inform you all that I have, after almost exactly one year of having NO system at all, finished my dedicated audio room!!! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Lots of time, research, blood, sweat and tears went into this.

General room info:
15'x22'x8'
Hat channel through the ceiling to decouple floor joists from ceiling drywall.
Completely rebuilt all air return and supplies to use fiberboard and insulated slinky tube to eliminate vent borne noise pollution.
double drywall on ceiling with green glue
5/8ths drywall used throughout
3 dedicated 20 amp circuits 2 for the front of the room 1 for a completely exterior audio closet for future A/V equipment.
several conduits inside the walls throughout the room for future proofing (planning to put a music server in the audio closet and use my TV as a monitor as well as a 30' usb for keyboard and mouse use)
9 channel surround prewire.

Equipment info:
Speakers - RM40s fully active
Pre-amp/DAC/Crossover- Modded DCX
Amps- Homemade Simple SE SET amps (here for more details http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=73713.20 ) and QSC dca 1222
Stand- Odyssey audio stand
Cabling- combo of Kimber Kable and Bolder Cables.
room treatment- GIK acoustics 242 x5, 244 x3, monster traps x 3, soffit traps x 3, scopus T40 membrane bass traps x6 (BIG shout out to Bryan for his immense knowledge and infinite patience!!!), various 8th nerve corner and seam treatments. Home made window well stuffers to blot out light and provide a bit of absorbtion.

If you missed my original build thread here it is:  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=113108.msg1176221#msg1176221

Without further adieu...

Neither does slap echo and corner issues.

So what does it sound like? Well first lets talk about what you don't hear. With all the equipment off the room is frighteningly silent! So quiet in fact that if you hold your breath the only sound you'll hear is the blood coursing through your veins. :o The decoupled ceiling does wonders for insuring upstairs sounds do not get downstairs. Aside from the nigh impossible to eliminate sound of my daughters running around on hardwood floors above the room you basically hear nothing else period.

So what about music? Well Tyson was kind enough to come over yesterday with his calibrated mic and we took the following measurements from the listening position.

so as usual with 8 foot ceilings there was an issue at 70ish hz The red line shows the un-EQ'd results, blue is EQ'd the left speaker started out with a -6dB @ 75hz adjustment, but we ended up being much more aggressive with a -14dB change. The slight rise from around 10kHz up was adjusted for later, but we forgot to get measurements for.

After some tweaking and doing the ritualistic audiophile shuffle of moving the listening position, bringing speakers forward/back/adjusting toe-in we finally got to a spot where it was just... Jaw dropping. Gorgeous even! I can honestly say the results far exceeded my expectations in almost every way. Imaging and soundstage have always been a focal point to me. And boy does excel at that! it is unsettling how pinpoint it is. as far as soundstaging I think my wife said it best when she said 'it doesn't even sound like anything is coming out of the speakers, even though intellectually I know that's where the sound is coming from, it sounds like the music is coming from all around.'  :o

When Tyson came over what struck me was first his ear to ear grin when he sat down in the listening chair and second just how passionate he was about the music itself and how great the particular tracks we were listening to were. I found myself shaking my head several times myself thinking 'wow, this is truly unreal and incredible!'

Any way, I wanted to show you all the finished product, I'll post more detail later.  :thumb:

There is so much to say about this room, I've been talking with Jason about it for months and months and the level of detail and planning and sheer thought that went into it is mind boggling.  The crazy thing is that when you are in there, just how incredibly quiet it is.  Like, you can't hear anything from the rest of the house, at all.  And the ambient nose level of the room itself is so low that you can hear your own pulse.  It's not "quite" like being under water, but it's close.

The thing that struck me when listening to music (before doing any EQ) was that the bass was too heavy but otherwise sounded very promising!  Up went the calibrated mic and the laptop with the HOLM Impulse software and started to run sweeps.  The room only had one bass node at 75hz and it was consistent for each speaker.  This tells me that the bass traps were working at removing front to back and side to side standing waves, and only the floor to ceiling mode remained.  Dialing it down with the EQ in the Behringer took all of 30 minutes.

After that it was just a matter of moving the RM40's around slightly to get the imaging really and truly locked in.  Once that was done, Jason and I pretty much spent the rest of the night spinning tunes and alternating turns in the sweet spot.  Just about every track I was uttering "Oh my GOD, OMFG!"  Most systems have strengths and weaknesses.  Jason's system has all strengths, no weaknesses.

The result is an emotional connection to the music that I've not heard anywhere else, ever.  Other systems have come very close (I'm looking at you, Galusha), but there is just something extra special about a fully active planar magnetic system driven by hand made SET amps.  I'm jealous that Jason can go down and experience it any time he wants :D

Sweet  :thumb: That is one nice looking room right there.

I'm curious. Are you passing the full signal from the DCX out to the mains?

Congrats on your new room, Pez.  Looks great.  Lovin the traps.  Don't forget people live upstairs and they might like to see you.  :P

Nice room indeed. Looks like you put alot of work and sweat into your room, your audio and your sound. It's a piece of art at this point..IMHO. (I am curious if you get any reflection from the back of your couch to your ears)

BTW Many people will not go to this extreme to fix a vital part of the sound...Enjoy the fruits of all your labor.

That looks great!  You're biamping with tube amps?  I miss my RM40s.

When do you put in the projector?  ;-)

That is a great implementation of a host of excellent isolation ideas for sound.  Well done, and glad that your dedicated room has turned out so well!

Nice work on your room, I'm jealous.  I would like to know what mods you did to the DCX?  And the DCX is your DAC?  I have heard the digital inputs on the DCX are not very good, any truth in that or did your mods take care of that problem?  I'm currently working on my room as well, just paint and acoustic treatment, not a complete build as you did.

I'm curious. Are you passing the full signal from the DCX out to the mains?

To answer the DCX questions I am running the RM40s tri-amped. I have the tiger stripe maple amp running the tweeter, the Spalted maple amp running the mids and the qsc pro amp running the woofers. believe it or not the 5 watt SET amps output more than enough to BLAST sound. As a matter of fact the woofer amp wimps out well before the SETs even start breaking a sweat.

When do you put in the projector?  ;-)

I have a conduit going through the ceiling of the room specifically to accommodate a projector potentially in the future.  :green: Not a priority, but certainly a possibility!

I bought this modded from TomS the only change I made thereafter was adding a WBT digital connector. I personally have tried both digital and analog inputs on the DCX and find very little difference IMO. I seem to be in the minority on that one though. TomS did the following mods to this unit.

- Jan Didden input/output board replacement kit (Pilgham Audio)
- Frank Oettle sample rate converter/master clock replacement kit (Pilgham Audio)
- Frank Oettle dual mini-regulator kits with DC power filters (Pilgham Audio)
- Replace XLR AES/EBU input with bulkhead BNC jack and hardwire to main board transformer
- Replace all bypass electrolytics with BG or Panasonic FC/FM series caps
- Remove extra SMD A/D converter to reduce power/noise (no longer needed)
- Replace all three SMD AKM4393 DACs with AKM4396 DACs

As far as treating your room that is a HUGE step. It is probably the single biggest thing you can do to drastically and instantly bring your system to a higher plane. Really interested to see how this works out for you.

Guys I really appreciate the kind words! Still doing minor adjustments and I'm going to remove a tier from the stand and put the bass amp in my closet behind the front of the room since it has an internal fan which make a bit of noise. I have a direct conduit to the spot it will live and it can be as loud as it wants to be.  :green:

Forgot to say Thanks to Tyson for the help getting the system polished.  :thumb:

Looks great, and I bet it sounds it too!  My room is similar dimensions (much higher ceiling, though) but I've ended with my RM-40's much farther into the room (mostly farther from the side walls).

IIRC the efficiency of the mids and tweeter are each much better than 100 dB without the passive Xover, so I'm not surprised 5W is plenty.

BTW, I'm sure I've posted about it before, I'm a huge fan of the 2nd gen CDWG's on the mids (which I see you're missing 8).  I also need to update my system page and pictures)
