I find new music by browsing All Music Guide books, The All Music Guide to Rock, and the All Music Guide to Jazz.
Problem is the latest in print editions a=only go up to around the year 2000.
So I have also used the Rolling Stone top 500, and a few other lists I have found on the web rating quantities of albums.
I try to buy five star albums.
I have been buying mostly used Lps locally. I take the books along as they are marked with whati own.

Recently I have been working on Rock post 2000. Filling in the biggest gaps post 2000 Rock.
I tend to buy albums unheard. I buy stuff 'rated' highly. I want to listen to it, and learn why it is good.
Some may say that is crazy, but it works for me.
I own 2,200 Rock, and 2,200 Jazz All highly rated.. I always have great music to listen to.

My 2,000 Classical is not as easily worked on, as Classical does not have the same sort of ratings easily found in mass. Classical is usally one review at a time, and the main books, like Penguin, just do not do the job. Penguin gives a reasonable recommendation, with a strong bias to British artists.

Jimi Hendrix. New album from some old tapes, "People, Hell and Angels". Superb, WONDERFUL talent from his crazy lyrics and captivating guitar work. Found it first on MOG. (Song 12 is where you can hear how SRV got some of his licks.)

Yeah, I have SBTRKT's last album, discovered through Spotify, saw a friend was listening and checked it out. Cool sounds.

BTW, I know this should be obvious , but how do you make a hyperlink in a post, you know, with the name of something, let's say, but it links out to a page? I keep tying the 'insert hyperlink' button, but I must be missing something...

Not really obvious, I picked it up studying the posts of the esteemed Mr. Lonewolf. Select the insert hyperlink button, backspace over the last '[' in the first 'url' , replace with an '=' , ('url='), do your control 'V' to copy the http address, then replace the closing ']', then type in whatever name, title, etc you want in front of the last '/url'. (Note that I've replaced the bracket with apostrophe to prevent it from showing as a link.) Hope this helps, you can also see how it really looks by selecting 'quote' on a post that has an example matching what you want to do, and review the 'url' line info.

anyway...what was the question?

right now, for me i'm finding the "sub-genres" in cdbaby.com can lead me to some new and enjoyable stuff that i was unaware of. click on "genres", such as "folk" and then you can continue to click on sub-genres like "jazzy folk", "folk-rock", "like joni" (as in joni mitchell), etc., etc.

same with "rock" or "jazz" or any other genre of music. they all have sub-genres that'll come up on the left-hand margin and this will allow you to
get really specific and hone-in on what you're probably looking for by refining your search.

using this technique has led me to some really good finds lately.

this way, "one artist leads to another, which leads to another..."

serendipity is at play here, because a lot of times you'll come across somebody that you like that you've never heard of before (while you were
really looking up somebody else).

most of the offerings on this site have :30 sec (or longer) sound samples, which makes all this possible.

and another one from back in the day (where i would download new stuff that i had just come across) was emusic.com. i just looked at a
couple albums (yes, i would dwnload complete albums) and those go back to 2002. i discovered quite a lot of european jazz through that site
that i would have not known about otherwise.
