Now, if I can only get my son to explain the math of surface plasmons, and (obviously) gain access to that customized Raman spectroscopy unit...

and yes, it probably leads to an explaination of the function of Bybees.

As much as I would like, my family has no relation to the Raman spectroscopy unit, although my undergraduate chemistry professors probably wished as such...

I have used and developed a few Raman methods. It can be a powerful tool. The most work is getting a calibration spectra on anything that is not pure and unknown. The handheld units are so "Star Treky". Being able to scan and identify substances is pretty cool.
I have also used SPR a bunch but that does not mean I know jack about surface plasmons.

I ate a fair bit of Ramen noodles in college, but have since graduated beyond that, thankfully.

Too bad, this article dont inform the origin from the flicker noise.
