In the tree outside my study. Actually there are two but the other one was too hard to get a photo of. This is after about 50 photos, I think it's the "Buzz off and let me have my nap" look!

John - Excellent photograph!  That is a beautiful owl, kind of reminds me of a hairy Hobbit.   :D

Frogmouths are actually not owls, but more closely related to whip-poor-wills- insect eaters. Did some grad school work on that family.  Regardless, great photo.

Thanks for the info.  Still looks somewhat like a hairy Hobbit though!

Thanks for the comments :)

That one hopped around to face the other way later on and I was able to catch them both just before sunset.

Yes, not owls, although they are nocturnal.

Impressive shots, John.  I've heard our US cousins of the frogmouths all my life- whip poor will and chuck wills widow- but they are so well camoflaged that I've never seen one.

Photographing birds is difficult. For me, it's really only a "right place at the right time" kinda thing. So I mostly don't do it. Typically, there are branches in the way, and it's hard to get close enough for a reasonable shot. The lens I used here is 300mm on DX so effectively 450mm. I think that's about the minimum.

After showing the first shot to a neighbour they told me that they have a pair of Powerful Owls that nest in a tree in their backyard. WHAT?! I've heard them plenty of times but never knew what they were. They come here in winter so I'll be bugging them for info/sightings/caniclimbonyourroof  :green:

Hay John. Thanks for sharing and for putting it specifically in it's own post.
I probably would have missed this otherwise but am glad I didn't. Just beautiful!
