When did American homes get so huge?

Good Lord,,won't bid the job under 5k sq/ft....Holy Moly,, and i gotta ask here ,,being from Canada and not taxed terrible yet ,,what are the taxes ?? i have a friend in NJ and her little home (1000sq/ft main level,3 small beds upper) is taxed at 12k bucks a year . Wowwwww....All i can say is that's hi,hi and very hi.. i can't imagine the bigger homes !!!!

Bob,

Where are you looking to move? Are you staying in the same town? There are some pretty nice new developments by me that are building what look like 2500 sq ft homes. I'd guess they cost about $5-600k.
After all that work building your home theater I'm surprised you would leave so soon.

And I like fireplaces. We put a wood burning stove insert in the basement fireplace and we ran it all winter. The fuel is plentiful and free and it puts out a ton of heat. My plan for the home theater is to keep that big room at 50 degrees during the winter and use the fireplace when I'm listening to music or watching a movie. I'll get one of those propane inserts that look nice and have a remote control.

Yes NJ property taxes are expensive. I got out of there 15 years ago (I lived in both central and southern parts of the state). Nassau County in Long Island NY is worse. Here's a house in central NJ with $20k of property taxes. There are more expensive areas too. I have a summer house in Nassau County that is an 800 sq ft bungalow and the property taxes are over $9k/year.

CA has a long history of taxes/issues (Proposition 13). Very expensive real estate. That house is about the size of mine with the finished basement I have. Years back I was offered several jobs (they were begging me) in that area but the price of housing was just too much. There's places like Sedona, AZ too where people buy an expensive lot with a house on it and demolish it.

Prop 13 keeped the tax rates down and caused Acts like Mello-Roos to pass where a property owner who bought new in an area had additional funds due to pay for municipality improvements like Fire Stations and schools. My first home had Mello-Roos attached.

Wow.....I have 10 acres 25 mins from a city of 1 million, the house is about 2800 sq ft, newly renovated.
my taxes have gone up $100 in the last 17 yrs......a whopping $1375.....valued at about 400k
Didnt know how lucky I was.

Yes - you are extremely lucky. The next town over from me has lots of older homes and whatever they are building is silly big as the neighborhood is expensive:
