Phone issues
« on: 1 Mar 2013, 09:33 pm »
Toward the end of last week, people started emailing asking why I was not responding to their phone calls or voice mail. What calls?  What voice mail?  My phone never rang and my voice mail box was empty.

I thought perhaps I was just having problems connecting to the cell tower nearest our shop.  So I talked to Sprint and they sent me a device that basically creates a mini cell tower in your home or business.  This should certainly clear things up.  This device requires access to a router and also to a window (for the GPS sensor), both of which we do have.  But the cables were not long enough to reach between the router and the window.  So I ordered longer cables.  Meanwhile, no phone service.

While we were waiting for the cables to arrive (they are still not here), I found that I was not getting phone calls at home either.  So it obviously wasn't a cell tower problem (at least not totally).

So today I took my phone into the Sprint store.  The gentleman who helped me out found that during some update, that "domestic calls" was turned off.  Which means my phone was roaming for international cell towers (which we don't have here).  After turning domestic calls back on, he was sure that would clear things up.  He tried calling my phone, but to no avail.

So he sent me to another phone outlet that had a technician who might be able to sort the issue out.  I handed him my phone and he said to come back later after he had a chance to look at it.  So now I don't get calls, don't get voicemails and don't have a phone to keep track of.

I am only posting this message to let you know that if you tried calling us in the past week and left a voice message, the fact that we did not respond is not personal.  If we ever do get your message, we certainly will.  Of course, I will first need a working phone.  Hopefully later today...

I took my phone to the Sprint Store where I purchased it.  A gentleman working there identified a problem.  "Your  'domestic calling' setting was turned off," he said, "So your phone is searching for international cell towers."

"There aren't any international towers around here," I said.  To which he replied, "Of course not.  That is why you are not receiving incoming calls."

He turned on the domestic calling setting and called my phone.  Naturally it did not ring.  So he sent me to another cell phone store staffed by a technician who might possibly be able to sort out the problem.

When I arrived there, a young gentleman said he would look at it but that it would take him about an hour.  So I went back to the shop and returned later.

When I returned, he indicated that he was able to get it working again.  I asked him if he had to do a factory re-set on the phone.  He said no, that was not necessary.  Turns out it was just one of those weird, one-of-a-kind of things.  My phone could locate the network and I could call out for some reason, but some networking code was not set right so the network could not find my phone in order to transfer calls to it.

"You should have been here when I fixed it," he said. "It was dinging like crazy for about a half hour while it was downloading all the voice-mail messages that were backed up."

So my phone is back in business.  Which is both good and bad.  Its nice to have it working again, but I will be spending the week-end wading through and answering voice-mail messages.

All's well that ends well, I guess...although it sure was nice and peaceful this past week.

Thanks for the update, Jim.  I've posted your comments on AVS so folks there understand where you've been. :)

Glad to hear that your phone is working again Jim. Sounds like you will be very busy catching up with all of the voice mail messages!
