A VMPS Tale

Once upon a time we had two guys who got together in El Sobrante.

One was one of the premier speaker designers of our time and the other was know for his similar artistry in the art of fine speaker cabinets

One fellows name was Mark L Schifter, and the others Brian Cheney, forever known as MLS and Big B. (Sometimes called the Sonic Sorcerer from El Sobrante)

Well these two sat down and brainstormed about many things, one of which, is what this tale is about

After much discussion they decided that combining their "fortes" to produce incredible value and performance in a "High End" loudspeaker was a lofty and valiant goal, and so they did.

And so it was, that MLS had a brand new factory in a far away land and this is the birthplace of many a VMPS speaker,

These boxlike looking objects are VMPS Larvae, that haven't hatched yet, and are about to be born and sent on a musical journey.

Part of that journey involves developing openings for "drivers" and growing a beautiful skin for owners to keep shiny (so wives will allow them to be kept in places other than garages and basements  )

Once that skin is fully developed, the big and little speakers go touring on paths around the factory and are given special fittings and devices to help them on their way, making friends with their makers.

Here a young girl with a mallet performs a little "surgery" so that each speaker can wear their grill.  Not to worry it is a "painless" operation.

The maker above pridefully adds the finishing touches to make the speakers strong and resiliant.

Much of the time is spent socializing with other speakers, you know the "Oh, I like your new look" kinda stuff  "Do you think this will go good with my drivers?"

Many find long lost cousins and relatives from different family tree's  8)

Some form tribes in the Jungle, "Ubula Dula jui jui, Simba Simba"

Some of the adults spend "family time" in the Rosewood Forest (notice the kids playing in the backround)  Isn't that Auntie Rose and Uncle Woody over there?

But as night begins to fall....

They make their way back and check in with their very proud makers for graduation photos and preparation for their new journey.

Who proudly inspect them and give them advice about the new traveling suit they will wear to protect them for their sea cruise

Where they are suited up, and gathered (this is the Kiddie Cargo) to begin the Oceanic Cruise leg of their trip.

Where weeks later they arrive at the VMPS Sonic Magic factory where they are outfited with their new drivers, sprinkled with Sonic Sorcerer dust, and sent to enthusiasts all over the world.

They then shed their outer skin. then....

...their inner skin

... and sing their little buns off

I hope you enjoyed this VMPS tale, and the next editions will be "on the water" in just a couple days.

It is sad when we have the same sense of humor!!!!

And quite a SON he is I can tell you  :D  I've been in awe of this child of zilla now for the past couple of days.   He has definitily put some flame to my 626Rs; I've been having to keep a steady hand on my linestage volume control, as baby zilla likes to take off on you if you're not pulling in the reins a bit

What a lovely story...
... but is hardly ends there.

There is much to do before this coming CES (in 2005) and I for one plan on being  MAJOR PART of the Big B parade...

Business is often complex... many times unnerving... but rarely yields the sense of complete satisfaction like the one I get (and the folks in the plant) when prepping a VMPS Loudspeaker Enclosure for shipment...

The great pride these folks take in THEIR VMPS, well, you'd have to see it first hand to understand...

Ours in the ONLY factory I'm aware of that does NOT pay by the piece... we pay by the day... In other words... A Salary... (big new in Guang Dong Province)...

There is so much more to tell you all about what we are doing togther... the plans we have made... and how we are (hopefully) going to achieve them. This is a special relationship --- often filled with lots of emotion and pride... but in the end one that's dear and special to me... I want to thank many of you for the mail I've received about ourr contribution to this effort...

One day I'd like to invite several of you to visit to see what we are doing for Big B / JAC and others... You'd be amazed... (even I was today)...

We hit 41c today (BLAZING Hot and Humid)... but before I hit the showers here (to make me passable at my fave / rave Japanese Restuarant tonight... Restaurant Amori) I wanted to take a moment and recognize my friend John Casler for his efforts here, and in MANY other places... You are well thought of my friend in these (and other) quarters...

Humbly...

With thanks...

Good business practice and promotes better craftsmanship on each piece I would think.  I hope that the employees make a decent living, maybe even some benefits like health insurance and retirement.  I guess not all American businesses are evil empires.

Very entertaining story John, thanks.

When is it happening/when will VMPS be there?

I couldn't find VMPS on this list:

Thanks for your reply...

The truth of it is that we do NOT have all of this in place now...

We do however have some things that mean a lot to these folks "in the today"... We have:

Good Food --- 3X per day...

Clean Toilets + Showers and plenty of them...

A healthy working environment...

A Motor Scooter and Bicycle Repair (this is VERY important)...

Two Factory Dogs (they like this)...

A newly organized Day Care...

etc.

We ared trying step-by-step to offer more and more... This will all take time... We are defintely NOT the norm for this part of the world.

More to follow...

All the best...

Hey... this is great news.

By manufacturing in China, I'd expect that the price on the VMPS speakers will drop significantly.

With a little guesswork, we can take the Rocket 750SE Speaker's price of $1500 a pair, and just add the increased costs, if any, due to swapping out the drivers. Heck, a $2500 per pair price for RM40s should be about right and hopefully still provide Brian with some good profit per sale.

Yeah baby! Hopefully, I'll soon have my only dreamed about RM40s.

I hope the China shop is making the Black Gloss cabinets too?

Keep in mind, only the cabinets are made in china, the rest of the speakers still hand made & assembled by Brian and team.  I don't expect any of the prices to come down, just think of it as you're getting more "cabinet" than you were before.

I hope Brian and MLS can expand the offerings of MLS cabinets to the Larger Sub, and RM30's..

Oh crap. I hope you are wrong about that.(fingers crossed). Maybe we can buy the cabinets from Mark, and then buy the rest from Brian or another DIY company and do the assembly ourselves? (keeping my dream alive for an affordable RM40) :)

Hey Merc,

The 40's are wonderful speakers.   Brian just announced a cabinet upgrade special for existing customers.  I suspect that Brian will have a number of "certified pre-owned" cabinets w/new speaker parts for sale in the near future.

Keep an eye out on Audiogon for RM40's as they come up for sale now and then.  Hopefully they'll be near Houston as shipping the RM40's can get expensive.

shokunin,

I considered a Black pair, currently available on Agone from Louisianna(within driving distance), but they are original models(without the needed updates) and they still cost $2800 for the pair.

Anyone know if Mark is gonna offer the cabinets for sale to end users?

Hi Merc,

Shokunin is correct.  And I know of an old client near you who is considering the MLS upgrade, but might sell his Piano Black RM40s at a reasonable price.  In fact, he may see this post and contact you directly.
