Plasma tv and bluray player recommendations ?
« on: 21 Feb 2013, 11:39 am »

Hi all Audio Circle members.

I might be too early in my search for the ideal TV and Bluray player combo that I want to purchase between the end of 2013 and up to the middle of 2014.
Better early than last minute.
A lot of things can change from now until 2014, but who knows,
I might win at the lottery and have to money to do my purchase earlier.
I have pretty much decided to buy a Panasonic plasma TV size between 32 to 50 inches, the bigger the better, but the lower price, also the better.
The bluray player could be a Panasonic, mainly because of the compatibility between the TV and the player, but I am open to suggestions.
WARNING !
Do not suggest to me any Korean products (LG – Samsung)
I will not buy any products made in Korea and don’t ask me why, because I won’t tell you.
That been said, I will return to my normal programming.
I am looking for someone that already had experience with a Panasonic plasma TV.
Most of the flat screen TV I have listened to in local stores,
have low quality sound or should I write: Terrible sound.
Therefore I am looking for a TV with a RCA variable output.
The TV RCA output will drive my ss Sony receiver or my Decware SET tube amplifier with of course my GR Research V1.
I am also looking for a variable output jack for my Sennheiser HD-570 (60 Ohms) headphones.
They might be hard to drive with the TV output ?
My other questions are:
780 or 1080p resolution ?
Right now, most of my movies are on DVDs
I am not sure if in the future I will buy (Rent) bluray disc.
Please comment on that.
Can the new flat screen TV work with the old rabbit ears antenna?
Why you may ask.
Because in case of the cable failure.
Now the Bluray player.
I don’t see/want a 3D model, because I don’t want to use their special glasses, I already wear prescription glasses and I have a problem synchronizing my eyes, I had two operation to fix my crooked eyes.
(Yes you can laugh, but it’s true.)
I also want a RCA output from the player to feed my amplifier, but I wonder it I can get variable output from the player?
My budget for the player is about 250 USD and my budget for the TV is 700 USD (Including sales taxes)
What do I need to do to update the software of the TV and player?
Do I need to go via a computer?
What is/are the advantage(s) of the HMDI or is that now a standard?
I am not looking for the best of the best, but a good quality (Image and sound) price ratio.
Of course I will buy locally (Montreal, Canada) to get local after sales service.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Guy.

Only three companies make plasma, and you won't buy from two of them. Fortunately, Panasonic makes excellent sets. The higher you go of the line, the better the picture and the more bells and whistles. On the player side, I would opt for Oppo. Their players are stellar for video and audio purposes.

Hi Atlplasma and all Audio Circle members.
Thanks for sharing with me and all the Audio Circle members your opinion and experience.
The problem with OPPO is that they are not in Montreal, Canada.
I would prefer to buy from a local for the after sales services.

Thanks.

I own 2 Panny plasma's, and will buy a 3rd if I have any $ left over from my basement build project for a family room and HT down there.

I own a U model 42, and a VT30 55.  Both are excellent units.

I would go exclusively with 1080p were I you, the $ difference is minimal now.

Not sure how to recommend a panasonic plasma in your price range, that should make itself evident at the time based on what Best Buy, Future Shop or 2001 Audio Video have on sale when you want to pull the trigger.

Hi mcgsxr and all Audio Circle members.
Thanks for sharing your experience, highly appreciated.
I am not sure about Best Buy, look as if they might not be in business anymore when I am ready to buy and Future Shop is own by Best Buy.
I have already in mind many stores I can do business with.
Thanks.

Hi Guy:

On the Oppo and for what it is worth, they offer excellent product support. Do a search on Oppo on this site, and you will read posts about how owners have received service even after their warranties have expired.

I watched a videocast with Scott Wilkinson (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/video-coverage/video-coverage/oled-tv-calibration-smart-tv-s-4k-or-8k-and-more-in-the-chat-room.html) yesterday, and he had nice things to say about Panasonic's new ZT series as well as observations on refresh rates, 4K resolution, and a lot more.

Go Panasonic all the way. Their plasmas are first rate and their bluray players rate very highly as well. As to which models to look at, you will want to wait until closer to your buying time. Like all manufacturers, Panasonic are about to roll out their 2013 models but there are very few details on how they will compare to the older 2012 models.

Hi electricbear and all Audio Circle members.
Your nick name is electricbear,
but your avatar show a little pussy cat ? ? ?
Thanks for the info.
I might buy the Panasonic combo. (TV/Bluray player.)
I would like the OPPO but even their entry model at 499 USD is not within my budget and I have to take into account that I will have to pay custom tax since I will be in Canada, which will make it even more expensive.
By the way, I am not looking for the best of the best, anything better than what I've been watching for the past 25 would be good enough for me.

I have a Samsung 43 inch plasma, which I like a lot.  It doesn't have a lot of connections, though (no computer monitor connection, for instance), but then it was only $400.  I use it in a bright during the day living room.  It's 720p, but it's so far away from where I sit (about 10 feet) that I couldn't distinguish between 720p or 1080p at that distance.

It replaced a Samsung 32 inch LCD, and the plasma has a much better picture.

Hi ctviggen and all Audio Circle members.
Thanks for your comments, however, as I mention in my original post, I will not buy any Korean products and if you give me one Korean made TV I will trow it in the garbage.
You have 4288 posts and I've never read/saw anything from you up to now.

I bought a 55" Panasonic Plasma around three months ago and love everything about it EXCEPT that RCA analog connections for "audio out" are a thing of the past. The "digital out" also annoys me as it passes either PCM or Dolby 5.1 according to the feed and you can't tell it to mix down 5.1 to 2 channel. (I don't listen to anything other than 2 channel stereo.) So, you are limited to audio out from either the DVD player or your cable box/DVR recorder unless you feed the digital signal to a 5.1 or better receiver. I've had the worst possible experiences with product support from Korean companies myself and swore I would never, under any circumstances, EVER buy anything from Samsung and LG again. So that leaves Panasonic, in spite of  connectivity limitations. I researched DVD/Blu-Ray players ad nauseum and there were too many gripes about firmware, support, and buggy networking issues with the Panasonic players, so I bought a Sony BDPS790 player ($250.00), which has stunning video performance (and RCA outputs for sound, which is increasingly less common.) Turns out, as far as streaming goes, I'm out of luck. I have all Apple computers at home and apparently the Sony will not play well with anything Apple (incompatible security protocols) and I've just given up on trying to stream video. If you don't care about streaming video service, the Panasonic players get great reviews as far as a disc playback machine.

Hi Photon46 and all Audio Circle members.
Thanks for share with me and all Audio Circle your experience with Panasonic as well as Korean products.
The reason why I will never buy a Korean products is quite different from you.
As nothing to do with their products, but more with the Koreans themselves.
Sorry, I won't say more.
What scares me is the up-dates on the software or whatever you call it.
I guess you need a laptop to up date your TV ? ? ?
It might be complicated and I hate anything that is complicated and it's not because someone tell me it's easy, that it means it easy for me.
Might be easy for him the software guru, but it's not for me,
because I am far from being a computer guru.
As I often say:
Products are designed by engineer for engineer.
I am now gathering information that will help me buy the right thing.

I was able to post more before I had kids.  The only reason I can post today is that I'm at home waiting for carpeting people (trying to sell the house and am replacing carpet).

What's the difference between Korean products and products from other Asian countries?  Your original and all other posts are too rambling for me to read in their entirety.

I bought a Panni 55GT50 this year and got a Panni DMP-BDT220 3D Blu Ray player to go with it. Very good picture and the player was less than $100, so you could add that extra savings to your TV budget. If you want to mix and match the "smart" TV functionality you could get a Samsung Blu Ray and have different web access functionality - one ont he TV and one on the player.

Oppo's are great, but they only used to be cheap, they are now pretty expensive.

Guy 13,
I purchased a 50" Panasonic plasma over one year ago and I highly recommend it.  I spent hours at a tv store comparing LCD, led, and plasma.  I liked the "natural" look of the plasma best. For sound I mute the tv and run RCA from my DVD player to my AVA Fet valve dac. This lets me play 2 channel through my magnepans. You must set your audio out to PCM on your DVD menu.

Like BobM, I also got a GT50.

If you're going to use OTA like I am, use this antenna

You must set your audio out to PCM on your DVD menu.

There's no problem doing that for your dvd's, but it doesn't solve the issue for other signal sources. I miss the way I could deal with audio on my five year old Sony LCD; run all your sources into the TV and take the audio out of the television's analog two channel outputs to your preamp. No switching from source to source like I have to do now with the Panasonic.

Don't think you can go wrong with a Panasonic.  I read all the reports when I was shopping and grabbed up a Panny 60".  Back then, the Pioneers could get even blacker but were costlier.  My brother-in-law has one and I'm still happy.  Samsung might be my second choice.

A friend got one of the smaller Samsung TV's and it had a lousy OTA tuner, it could only pick up 1 channel. She replaced it with a Panny and all the available channels come in strong. The Samsung TV in the RV I'm staying in has the same problem so I'm using a stand alone OTA tuner.

Bottom line: if you plan to watch Over-The-Air digital TV buy your TV locally so it can be easily returned - or get a Panny.
