Phillips Original 55-cd box set - WOW
« on: 20 Feb 2013, 05:57 pm »
Just purchased the Phillips 55-cd set, for $100 on Amazon.
I can't wait to get it; and I'm surprised how little overlap there is between my 40-50 Phillips LPs and 30 or so CD and SACDs, probably only about 10 recordings.

As always with these sets, one can pick apart the choices of what's in and what's out, but I've got to say that this is a pretty high standard they have here.

I recently purchased this set and the only disc that I already had was the Berlioz Symphony Fantastic (reissued on Pantatone).

A couple of unexpected surprises for me was the Verdi Requiem with John Eliot Gardiner, the Orff Carmina Burana with Seiji Ozawa/Berlin Philharmonic, and the Te Kanawa/Mozart disc.

In fact, out of the dozen or so Carminas I own, the Ozawa has become one of my favorites, along with the Stokowski/Houston Symphony and the Previn/London Symphony.

BTW, Ozawa's other Carmina with the Boston Symphony doesn't compare to his Berlin Philharmonic recording.

Thanks, I haven't gotten to any of those yet.   I'm excited to hear about the two chorus pieces being good, as I'm a choirister and I've performed Carmina.   I like Gardiner and have his Beethoven and Schumann cycles.

Thanks for sharing those as I'll cue them up this weekend.

Thanks for the tip, it's now on my wish list!  :green:

I'll return the favor although this one costs a bit more it has a pretty good collection of music too! It contains 30 CDs on the Harmonia Mundi label. I got mine on sale at a different site for about 1/2 off.
