H frame enclosure question for a dumb dumb
« on: 12 Feb 2013, 02:47 am »
hello all,
i have be interested in open baffle speakers for some time and i a m considering building some H-frame open baffle bass units.
so here is my question.  when you look at  voice of the theater bass units they sometimes have a horn type flare. why have we
not seen the same type of flare built into an H-frame?

thanks in advance

Well, I am not sure what exactly that speaker is, but sounds like a horn loaded speaker, so the horn flare would be the mouth of the horn.  The H frame is completely different in that it doesn't use compression as its open baffle. Baffle width would factor into off axis cancellation frequency.

wolf von langa has produce something similar to what i am thinking.

here is a link to his design.  this is an open baffle dipole bass with wave guide.  all drivers are field coils!

This is another one that seems similar (posted in Open Baffle circle):

yes, i have seen these before but forgot about them when i posted my example.
the other question that i have is that in these designs the woofer is partially covered
by the wave  guide.  why is that.  why not make a curve in the waveguide so that
all of the driver is exposed.  just curious.....

thanks again
