Unusual room effect on subwoofer...
« on: 11 Feb 2013, 03:29 am »
Do you think placing a cat scratching post in front of the subwoofer will affect the sound?

If so, more or less than having the speaker shredded by the cat...

Seems to be a choice of one or another with our new feline companion!

Shouldn't adversely affect the room or the sound as bass is omnidirectional in nature.  That said, the true experts on room dynamics might have a different take.

A lot depends on how you define cat scratching post.

Get a pet store and get some of that spray cat repellant - it shouldn't discolor anything and it really does work well.
Then the cat will use a scratching post instead of your grill cloth.
A little post shouldn't hurt the sound any.

I got some of that cat repellant spray for my sonex and it did nothing.  My cats kept using it for a scratching post.  Lately they have just lost interest in it thank god.

Bought a brand new listening chair about a yr ago....

Wasnt more than a week old when my daughters cat got into my room and shred the 2 back corners....

My wife was horrified and offered to buy a new one....like we have separate bank accounts or what??

The chair is still there, so is the cat....

I really love my daughter......but the cats days are numbered....

Here kitty, kitty.....

Yeah a cat scratching post is good thought.

Usually the cardboard ramp types are the ones the wifes cat goes for...

Have you priced that stuff?!! :o  It was $28 for a smallish spray bottle at the pet store we use!  I think I could probably replace the grill cloth for less than that...

In any case, the post is working -- being a cat, she won't scratch it (naturally), but she seems to have stopped scratching the subwoofer as well.  Instead, she's decided the two different sets of cat stairs we have sitting around are where she should scratch.  Good kitty! :thumb:

I don't dare move the scratching post, of course...

It's one of those upside-down vee shape types with one side sisal rope and the other side carpet.  We'll call it a room treatment and let it go at that.

Our old cats loved those cheap catnip soaked cardboard scratchers, this one is not the least bit interested in the cardboard pad with or without the catnip.

Many years ago we decided we loved our cats more than our furniture.  This one was trying my patience with the speakers, though...

I have been lucky enough with our cat.  As a new one, he did make some puncture marks in an older chair, but has spared all the new furniture.

He uses his scratching post, strategically placed by the back door, to advise me he needs to go outside.  I praise him for showing me "how strong he is" when he uses the post, and let him outside to patrol "his" territory.

He has not scratched any audio gear yet.  Good cat!   :icon_surprised:

A well timed 20Hz tone at 100dB will prevent the cat from going near that curious black box in the corner of the room. Ever.

I'm afraid kitty would shat all over the carpet or floor and completely miss the cat box....

True. But it'll only happen once. And it's not like the average cat owner isn't used to cleaning feline landminds anyway.
The bonus, is that you'll never have to re-fabric your speaker.

Just make sure the cat is facing the "right" way when you burst the test tone, else you'll be replacing that grill cloth anyway!

How about a metal grille? My cats were smart enough to avoid things stereo. My dog, that's another story.

You could always buy a bird like Thunderbrick did to give the cat something to do.
Perhaps he would be willing to ship out Jennie for a protracted visit?
