Organizing a library.

[begin rant]

So.....What genre is Lyle Lovett anyway?
Country? Gospel? Folk? Jazz?

Doing Google searches for, "What genre is ______<insert artist name here>_______" doesn't help. Seems they make up nearly as many genre titles as there are artists.

These compilation discs mess things up too. My OCD is driving me to drink (more).

Cleaning up a library, making it "all nice and neat" is more difficult that it should be. Although, I'm running across (good) music I've not played in years, so that's the bonus.
That's also the curse, because my cleaning process can stall when I run across a "new" find. It's taking forever.

When I'm changing tag on large groups of files, I'm unable to perform other tasks within the program, so I come to the outside world for a change of pace.
This is one of those times.
Anyway....back to the task at hand.

back later...........

Bob.. I feel your pain!

I have consolidated a few Itunes library(s) a couple of times that were on different hard drives, and always had to google the procedures to do it. What a headache!

Also I have found I do like Itunes despite the jabs some have made at this app. But it does not always download all the album art for your music and some artists just defy a category. Usually, but not always, they are quite good artists.

But I have been using Itunes for many years, and I will continue using it to rip and store AIFF files from CDs and use MOG for simple streaming of songs. The Iphone MOG app always has issues, but that is another rant.....arggghh.

I agree.

File songs under whatever you want to search for in the future. It's *your list*. Live on the edge and tag them however the hell you want.  :singing:

LL started out in country and that's generally where he's classified. But like Elvis Costello, he'll come out with different types of albums/music. Just listen to each album/song then decide for yourself what it is and classify accordingly.

Hey, Bob

Back in the days before cd's I was a dj for one of those 'underground' fm stations. We had (wild guess) 50,000 lp's in alphabetical order. No genres. I liked the idea, but it doesn't work so well with computer files.

For me Lyle is 'pop' as is Harry Belafonte, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits and Zappa (I think Frank would like it). Doesn't matter how you file or tag them, whatever works for you... those tags can be useful though.

One thing, you want enough folders to where they don't get too big, right now my Classical/Modern folder is over a TB and it's awkward to back up, though I have space available I have to go get bigger drives.

Don't sweat the petty stuff, have fun with it (sounds like you are)

Thanks guys. What does continue to pop in my mind, is that it is indeed my library, so I should be able to call it whatever I want.
The biggest problem is when a musician spans several genres, that's the rub. And then there's Pink Floyd. I've never been sure what to call those guys.

Plus, What do you do with Eric Clapton? He's been singing since before I was born, so the first thing that comes to mind is "Classic Rock", but the dude's still rockin, so his newest album that comes out next month certainly isn't "Classic".

Oh well. I'm sure things will be clearer if I have another beverage and listen to some more tunes.

I just classify PF and Clapton - Rock.

(Sounds like you're also a Allman Bros. fan!)

It's funny, the tagging software generally classifies Floyd as "Psychedelic Rock". Which is fine, I guess, but I've never seen any other band listed under that classification. So I suppose you could say that Pink Floyd is in a class by themselves.

Never was much of an Allman Brothers fan. When they were at their height, that wasn't the music I was interested in, so I wrote them off. Although, as the years go by, I've been finding myself liking music from people that I didn't like twenty years ago. I have also discovered they're playing some pretty decent music in elevators too.

iTunes Store > Rock > Psychedelic
https://itunes.apple.com/us/genre/music-rock-psychedelic/id1156

When I first started computer audio years ago, I wished that the standard music file tagging included the option for multiple genres as I have a number of songs I would have liked to see displayed under more than one genre category.

Indeed Steve. That would be nice.
Or at least assignable categories that we, the end user, could make our own multiple genres for.

The link didn't have PF listed, but it did have Sid Barrett in there. Not a fan of the rest of the bands listed though. Most I'd never heard of.

The list you first see is just a partial list of popular ones.  Click on an alphabetic letter link to see more.

Ohh...gotcha, thank you Steve.
Not sure how Psychedelic Horseshit is more popular than Pink Floyd, but who am I to judge.

It's just that you keep ending up your posts with "Brothers and Sisters!"

I was in the local Fry's supermarket (western US chain) and I was listening to the music. I was wondering if anyone noticed that they were playing The Clash's Rock the Casbah - only the version playing was "F... the Casbah, F... the Casbah, F... the Casbah, F... the Casbah, F... the Casbah,....!"   :o
