PGA2311 Preamp
« on: 10 Feb 2013, 12:58 am »
Just put together one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-version-PGA2311-Stero-Remote-Volume-Controller-Preamp-with-case-/140865254355?pt=US_Amplifier_Parts_Components&hash=item20cc3933d3:

Although I opted for a kit version so I could upgrade parts, but these preamps are also available pre-assembled as in the link above.

I have to say I am very impressed given the low cost. I hear no loss of detail, delivery is accurate and engaging. Sound quality leans towards bright/neutral, but not fatiguing. Remote is weak but I just use the learning function on my main remote and tossed the stock one. If possible I'd recommend replacing the output resistors. Someone on diyaudio did measurements and found the board performed surprisingly well, with very low distortion.

P.S.: I notice there are fewer listed right now probably because of Chinese New Year and many vendors have closed their listings. So after the 18th there should be more available from the better/more reputable vendors.

I've been watching these things on eBay, never really seriously, mostly because the same sellers had DACs that I'm looking at.  I think I might go for something like this that had the tube pre innards of the one Posidenvoice just built.  Nevertheless, a full featured preamp that doesn't suck for under $100 is a pretty cheap and cheerful product.
