SOLD: Rawson Built F5 CloneI am the second owner, having purchased this amplifier in May of 2010 from
forum user 'cujobob', who had Tim Rawson build it for him. This amplifier was
to be used in a bedroom 2 channel system ...but that never came about. So it
is being sold to fianance an active cross-over, bi-amp'ed DIY main speaker build.
I have used this amplifier on several ocassions to drive my current speakers,
just to hear it play. However because those speakers are only 86 dB efficient, it
was impractical to do so for more than a few hours at a time. This amplifier has
spent it's time here, boxed-up and stored.
I will rate this amplifier 6/10 on fit and finish. As with most of Tim's work, it has
an industrial looking aluminum case. There are some minor scratches on the
face plate that would easily brush out if appearance is important. It has a Plitron
toroidal transformer and Vampire jacks/RCAs. No power cord is supplied with the
amplifier.
This F5 clone amplifier sounds fantastic. The bass is espcially tight.
One consideration to keep in mind is that this amplifier (like all class A amps) uses
quite a bit of electricity and runs hot. From the designer's web site, "
Place the amplifer
in a well-ventilated location, as it draws about 180 watts during operation and requires
as much opportunity to cool itself as possible". These two factors are the main reasons
I cannot use this amplifier for bi-amping my daily-user DIY main speaker build ...which
is a real shame when considering that I could not ask for a better sounding amp.
