In case you're curious......
« on: 4 Feb 2013, 05:18 pm »
"Rocket Man" is the first tune I've played on vinyl in 30 years.

Yip, you heard that right, that's the first record I've spun since the mid-eighties.
Those pops and cracks aren't as bad as I thought they'd be. In fact, there's a certain sound quality they create that almost has a romantic feel.
The overall sound quality isn't the greatest, by far, but there's an underlying quality that I've not heard on my (very digital) system. Ever.

Hold on...be right back....
Oh, sorry, the wife was yelling down the stairs, "The 70's called, and they want their records back now".
So anyway......

As I control the volume and tone controls via my Android tablet, I'm wondering how much better the AR-XA would sound through the Jolida tubes than the Onkyo receiver.
Sliding my finger across the slick glass surface boosting the gain to the 3000 watts of infinite baffle making the entire house rattle, I'm thinking that this isn't the way I'm supposed to be doing it. But somehow I can't help myself. It's just so much fun. Besides....the hometheaterophile in me just can't help it.

Whoops, I'll be right back. Time to flip the record.
OK, I'm back now.....

I also can't help but to wonder what Toccata in Fugue would sound like with a quad of 15" in infinite baffle.
Isn't there a 6Hx note in there?

I think the tubes will have to wait to another day, this is just too much fun.
I keep staring at the large expanse of 16:9 in front of me wondering what happened to the video. Feels like there's something missing.
But I've got my Android to keep my eye's happy, so life is good.

Thanks to Wayner and Scott F. who helped me with the TT sooooo many years ago.
and a special thanks to my most recent 'crack dealer', "Blackmore" for the preamp and record cleaning station.

Let the journey begin.  :thumb:

You're doing what we all should be doing...enjoying more music.  :thumb:  Can't imagine what some Bach would sound like with the IB shaking the walls.

P.S.  as your newest crack dealer, the first one is free.

Bob - you keep tinkering away there and unless you've gotten fat and (more :icon_lol:) lazy in the past few years.....you'll be fully addicted to vinyl as so many of us are.

I'd love to give vinyl up - it's such a pain in the arse next to digital technologies - but it's the music that matters and nothing serves it as well than well sorted vinyl :thumb:

Don't know what Onkyo you have, but dollars to donuts a good phono stage will do wonders for your enjoyment level.  :thumb:

Thanks Mark. yea, you're why I used the phrase 'crack dealer'.
I'm sure I'll be looking to upgrade something in the future.

John, I'll be tinkering for sure. The AR still has the original wires on it. Those have to go, for sure.
Plus, there's a hum that changes when I handle the preamp, so something's amiss there.

Mitsu, This week I took delivery of a brand-spankin-new- Onkyo 616. It doesn't have a phone stage in it. I'm using the Graham Slee 2 Mark gave me as teh pre amp.
The Onkyo is part of the HT rig. Only temporarily will it have anything to do with vinyl.
I'm thinking that separating the HT equipment and 2 channel stuff is a good idea.
