My understanding is that refurb mini purchased through Apple store has the same warranty as new product.  I do not see any reason not to purchase refurb and save money.

Considering that you are getting the older model (2GB RAM / 2.3GHz i5 / USB 2.0 / Intel HD Graphics 3000) and that Apple will charge you sales tax, you might want to also consider the newer model (4GB RAM / 2.5GHz i5 / USB 3.0 / Intel HD Graphics 4000) from B&H Foto & Electronics for $565 shipped.

Depending on your sales tax rate, it might only cost you ~ $50+ for the brand new more capable updated model.

the specs will be just fine. I have a much older mac mini core solo that works well as a music server.

I have basically only bought refurbs from the Mac store, it is just about the only way to save money. However, I don't think the lower price on non-current models is worth it. Likely much better to spend the extra hundred bucks or whatever and get the current model. I am waiting for the current mac minis to show up on the Apple store. That's when I will pull the trigger.

I've been following the refurbished Minis also. I'd also wait for the current Oct. 2012 model to come back up. At only $509, it's only a bit more and you get a few of the new upgrades. The disapear quick.
