SUT versus Head Amp
« on: 31 Jan 2013, 11:33 pm »
looking to get more out of my denon DL 103r.
currently i am using a Denon AU-300LC MC SUT with a Graham Slee ReflexM

Should I upgrade the SUT to a Head amp say the graham slee elevator or go for a better SUT bob devices cinemag 1131 Both of these are similar in cost

Some say a sending the tiny signal thru the windings of a SUT messes with the phase.

Some say a head amp introduces noise an SUT does not

What opinions are out there

Headamps dont introduce noise, unless they are a bad design, this goes for all audio amplifiers in general... :green:

Without a doubt, go with the Slee.

I've directly compared SUTs to the Elevator and if you are looking to get to the next level of detail, the Elevator is the way to go. I use the Elevator feeding the Reflex. My LOMCs are a VDH, Yamamoto, and a Soundsmith modified Dynavector.

The SUTs that have been in the system are my Signet which is supposed to use Tamura iron and the K&K Premium. granted, the number of SUTs I've run through the system are limited but both seem to be very well received.

The SUTs sound good but there is a definate veiling compared to the Slee.

 ,,,just my $.02, YMMV

Another option is to build a phoneclone http://phonoclone.com/diy-pho4.html.  The stock phonoclone circuit is tuned for a DL103.  I use it with a SoundSmith DL103 and the combination is pretty sweet sounding.

Parts cost is between $100 and $200 depending on how crazy you get with op amps, coupling caps, connectors and case.  It's not hard to build.  Just stuff and solder parts, and wire up the connectors and power supply.  You could pay someone to build it for you and you'd still be way ahead of the price/performance curve.

Another Head Amp to consider would be the Soundsmith MCP2 Phono Preamp for LOMC.
Guess there are no real preferences here
