Nexus 4 on the way ( Its here )
« on: 31 Jan 2013, 05:22 am »
Google finally has the Nexus 4 in stock in the US at play.google.com for $350 unlocked.

I had gone to T-mobile where they were in stock, but they wanted and extra $20/mo after a discount plus rebate = $500. Plus taxes and fees while you are paying the $20 per month.

Once the phone arrives I will probably go with T-mobile since they have some decent plans.

This will be my second cell at least until my Iphone 4S contract is up in a few months. I have no land line and usually work from home so it makes sense for me.

UPDATE:  the Nexus 4 is on the way...still

Boring, but between Google Play store and my bank, I had a nice long delay due to fraud alerts on both ends. After the order I found that I had order 4 phones, they were all cancelled due to fraud alert, my credit card had a fraud alert and my Google Wallet was locked out.

Called the bank - they said Google had sent a $1 and a 0$ charge through which triggered an alert on their end. Took three days to get the card visible again in online banking. For Google Wallet I had to send in a pic of my state id and cc statement with only last 4 numbers showing, via the web - major pain.

After many days they opened my Google Wallet back up - you can't talk to anyone at Google by the way. So I reordered the phone, scolded them via comments for their lousy ordering system on Google Play, etc.

I am excited about the phone - have been researching it for days...

Will I write an Android phone app and become rich? Will I benefit from all the rich features of Android and the Google ecosystem? Will I become paranoid of sharing too much data with Google, even more than with Apple? Whatever happens, I will be dealing with lots of android geeks 20+ years younger than me.

I ordered the unlocked phone 16GB for $350. I got a bumper and and car and house charger(extra), and extra cable from Amazon for less than $25. I want to get the cordless induction charger when the tech improves and the price drops (micro-usb charging is faster for now)

Will probably end up with a T-mobile (7GB of data and unlimited everything else looks good) or possibly even Straight Talk plan for this phone. Still have a few months on my ATT iPhone 4S contract. Phones last about 2 years these days before they become 'obsolete', this one I would be able to sell in a heart beat since it is unlocked and pure (vendor-free) android. Living in Charlotte there is excellent GSM service, hence pretty good options.

In the end, I needed a second phone (no land line). I am on my iPhone at home all day for work, with an unlimited minutes plan, but what if... Yes there are hassles having 2 cell phones, but hey I don't have a watch to worry about.

Anyone else ordered this phone?

It has arrived (11 days from ship date). A T-mobile micro-sim kit took several more days to arrive. Activated it today.

$70/month for unlimited everything. I can add international for $10/mo (this is a GSM phone).

It may take a couple days to really get a chance - lots to do, but will check it out. Also going to order the Slimport HDMI adapter to put stuff on a TV.

The pricing data confuses me. I could buy a Nexus 4 here in AU for about $400 and then spend $20/mo for the connectivity.

What does $20 get you in Australia?

I guess we get very little compared to the rest of the world

For $70 I get
-unlimited text
-unlimited voice minutes
-unlimited data, 7GB at top speed
-usb tethering

I could also pay by the minute, day or month but get limited minutes, data etc.

Since it's been a few days since you last posted and presumably have had a chance to play with the phone, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Nexus.  How does it compare to the iphone?

I stand corrected, unlimited here is about the same, depending on the carrier. Although I don't think anyone here offers unlimited data. However the carriers usually make it "easier" to get a new phone included in the plan with the higher plans, when you have an outright phone you tend to get cheaper plans from resellers. I use this reseller:

OK a little more now that I have a second...

I really like the feel of the phone - it seems crisp and a very nice screen. Alarms and timers are great i the default build 4.2.2

Because I can't stay connected at home and have been trying to focus on that, I haven't really been able to explore all the features we all want to understand. I eventually want to do a little development, if only out of curiosity. But at this point it looks as if I may need to switch to ATT before I go much further with the phone, since they have a good signal almost everywhere I go in Charlotte. Really disappointed in T-Mobile so far. They had indicated that I would be fine.

I have one of these phones on the way.  I am as excited as a kid about to get his first bb gun!  These phones are getting reviews on par with the top smartphones (Iphone 5, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy 3) for half the price or less and they come unlocked.  I should be able to get a very nice data/voice package for a very reasonable price.  As a remodeling guy I was and am surprised how useful a smartphone is for me.  And this one should be a nice step up from my relatively dinosaur like Garmin Nuvifone... I can't wait :hyper:

I received the phone yesterday.  Really nice phone.  Nice design.  Great as a phone, sound quality is good.  Stupendously fast internet on WiFi and pretty good on network.  I am just getting used to it and setting up stuff but everything is fluid and fast, fast, fast.  I can't really compare it to other high end phones.  My spouse has an  Ipad though and the Google phone seems zippier to me on internet and apps.  The little app where you speak to the phone with a question is quite incredible.  It really works well.  Grasps what I am saying and gives me pertinent answers.  I can't comment on Google Now yet (it is supposed to be contextual info that is offered up by Google)  as the phone has to get to know my habits (that is pretty weird to say).  Battery life seems on the low side and the phone gets kind of warm while running things like Google Earth ( must really give the processor a work out...).

So far I love it.  The home screen with animated bars of light is just too cool, kind of a mix between the Matrix and Tron...

After a month with T-Mobile and a trouble ticket with no results, I have switched my provider to AT&T. Now I can use the phone in my house.

As I have basically put the phone use on hold until now I have a lot of catching up to do with the phone.

I did buy some NFC tags to play with so I will work with them as well.

10 days after I have switched to AT&T, where I already have my iPhone 4S. My Nexus 4 is alive! I can use it everywhere now. Disappointed that T-Mobile basically lied to me about signal strength in my naeighborhood and are still lying on the map of coverage on the website.

Anyway, no time to rant. Wireless hotspot tethering works! I am able connect to work with my work laptop from anywhere now. Scramble and Pancake brunch is now more do-able on a workday!

Also great news that AT&T added my unlocked Nexus 4 to my plan, and it is a month by month contract, independent of my 2-year contract for the iPhone. And the price is $10 more per month than the worthless T-Mo plan, but i will pay that happily.

Navigation is great, weather is great, chrome is great, screen is great, density of the phone is less even though it is larger than the iPhone. And battery life is really no worse than the iPhone.

How are you guys going with yours?

Price just dropped $100 (here anyway). In preparation for the Nexus 5, rumoured, but it seems like a good time to get a 4.

I'm a bit over my Nokia.

I use mine as a backup phone, and for tethering my laptop when my cable connection is down, or I need to connect on the go. So it is not my primary phone.

The biggest thing I do not like is the battery life. It is really not that bad compared to my iPhone, but it is never as charged as I want it to be when I need it. Solution: $40 Ankker 10,000 mAh battery for Iphone and Android.

Overall a very nice phone, hardly any complaints.
