New System for my friend

My friend said to me today that he was in the market for a new system, as we were talking about my system and asked my advice

He has ~$5k budget, so I suggested to him to put around 4k into the speakers and the rest into the reciever, he wants to do 7.1 home theatre and music - musically he likes eletronic music but he has a newborn son so it is just as likely to be playing sesame street songs as it is bad boy bill

He loves the way my LCR-15x3 and vrs1 and ls -150 sound - that being said those are not made anymore and not sure what the current price points are, I cannot remember what I paid for my package except that I only think I got a smoking deal whenever I turn the system on (or just look at them, the African Hazelwood looks great)

Is there a way he can put a VSA package together in that price range - if not what realistically does his price point need to be - I can probably convince him to take 5.1 for right now and then add 7.1 later on to get better speakers now [he may be willing to go used as well, willing to listen to all options, and yes I know that price range is a far stretch but it never hurts to ask]

His living room is realatively small but it opens up to the rest of the house, the room it is in is carpet but the rest of the house is tile, he doesnt need to push a lot of sound, I would guess he will not accept anything that does not have a subwoofer

I do not really see prices, so I am trying to see if that is doable and is so what confirguration would work, or if I need to look in a different direction for him

As far as I know, the least expensive VSA speakers are the VR-22 floorstanders at $2900/pair. I believe the LCR-4 is $2495/each and the Unifield One is $5995/pair.

So it would seem the least expensive package would be 4 X VR-22 + 1 X LCR-4 for ~ $8300 and that would be for a 5.0 system without subwoofer. For a $4K budget, you would obviously have to find some used older models. If you want recommendations for new speakers within that budget other than Von Schweikert, you should probably post in another circle, such as Home Theater and Video

There is a pair of VR-2s on Agon for 1395.00 I cannot comment on that model, perhaps someone else knows these?

I figured when the lower end line was dropped that 4k was not going to cut it but wanted to double check

I considered the vr2's when I bought my set, so I am familar with that model, thank you for the info

The 2100's are the precurser to the vr 2? or they came after the vr 2?

2100s were part of a home theater line of speakers and have side firing 10" woofers. They are one-piece speakers that also have a rear-firing tweeter. IIRC they go down to about 25Hz.

VSA doesn't like people discussing prices on these forums, as price depends on your geographic location. However, if you are in the US and buy factory direct, you can get a pair of VR-22 and an LCR-4 for about your budget (less than quoted above). Contact VSA to get your own quote. Now that doesn't leave much money for other components. So I would decide between the following:

1) Spend your budget on the above; get a really cheap pair of speakers for the surrounds and upgrade later; don't bother with a subwoofer for the time being; stretch a bit for the receiver.

2) Look for used VSA speakers.

3) Accept that VSA is a high end brand that is out of your price range and look elsewhere. There are plenty of other companies that make speakers in every price range.

My friend decided to hold off for now on any upgrade, he was more excited to upgrade than his wife...thanks for the info on contacting them directly, back when I got mine it all had to be done through local dealers, I didnt have one in my area so they okayed me to use the person from NC that was helping me on avsforum with a lot of advice who was a rep

Sorry about discussing pricing in the forum, I was not aware that was frowned upon - I knew with his budget VSA was a super far strech, but I would rather ask and have him get a shot at VSA's because he likes them, than just tell him no way - the more options the better for him to choose from
