BDP-1 and NAS
« on: 28 Jan 2013, 01:18 am »
Now that the BDP-1 has NAS capability I think I will be in the market to purchase the BDP-1. I don't see the need for the BDP-2 since my collection is not that huge. So my question is regarding networked music file access. If I use my Windows 2008 R2 server as my networked music file share to the BDP-1, will the BDP-1 require a rescan of the music files everytime I shutdown or put my server to sleep? This server is a software development box and I tend to put it to sleep every night. I am reluctant to buy a NAS for my home use since I think it is more trouble than I need.

From what I have read on AudioCircle I think the BDP-1 music DB is written onto the flash that contains the Linux OS so shutting down the file server should not cause a rescan unless the file server was not accessible. Just guessing here.

I hope to replace my 8+ year old SqueezeBox/Benchmark DAC1 combination with the BDP-1/NAD M51 combination. I also plan on using a PowerLine D-Link adapter so that I can transfer my music files to the BDP-1 using my home electrical wiring. I assume that should not be a sonic problem since this is a file transfer issue which should have guaranteed delivery on the network stack.

Hi yyz,

Yes the bdp is capable of remembering the database between shutdown/Stanby mode.  In the next firmware release (due in a week) will allow users to control if the bdp scans for changes during startup or not.  We highly recommend the use of powerline av kits and I don't believe I have read any comments from end users who have actually made use of such a device in regards of change in sound quality.

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I was reading a lot of your past posts on AC. It sounds like you have a very fun programming job.

I am assuming that once the remote music file is retrieved  into the BDP-1 through the PowerLine, the PowerLine is no longer needed in the music playback process of that single file. That is there is no file streaming involved (unlike a wired/wireless SqueezeBox).

Or, is the file retrieve done in chunks and buffered in the BDP-1. If this were the case would the BDP-2 have better chunking ability due to a larger internal memory buffer. I hope I am making sense. I am not very well versed on internals of the BDP-1/2.

Hi yyz,

There are two buffers involved, in input buffer that is very small (reading the file in) and an output buffer (data being sent to the sound card).  Data is read in, and the entire song is usually read in long before the file is done playing.  However unless you only have one song in your playlist, the BDP will begin to read in the next song while the first is playing.  You shouldn't have any issue playing back audio files, if you do it should be easy to troubleshoot if its the network or not as there is a benchmarking utility built in to inidicate available bandwidth between the bdp and the NAS.

Cheers,
Chris
