Here is a Challenge
« on: 28 Jan 2013, 12:05 am »
I found this wanted ad on Craigslist.  John, in Wentzville, is looking for a tube amp for $200.  Here is the body of his ad.  I couldn't get the title to copy with it.

I need a home stereo tube amplifier..
i am currently experimenting on my way to audio bliss and want to dip into the land of tubes to see if i find it to my liking.
im not looking for anything spectacular i just have never heard the "tube" sound everybody talks about..
a cheap tube amp will probably work fine.

The only amp that occurs to me is a Rogue 88 but I bet they are more like $500.  Anyone have any "cheap" ideas for John?

Wow Kent, that is pretty challenging.  I can't think of anything that cheap.  Wonder how much power he is looking for?  Used Jolida or Sophia Baby might be close to his price or maybe a Dynaco?  Wish he knew about Audio Circle and the GAS so he could hear before buying.

I have had 2 rogue 88's and they are the best value in my opinion and yes they can be had for 500 and rogue still supports them when I spoke to mark.
I am looking for another rogue 88 also.

I'm thinking this fellow should go over to Scott's house.
Or, in the very least, somebody should call him and give him a link here.

You're the GAS MASTER, Bob, why don't you contact him?

I would wager he is either a flipper or doesn't want to spend any money to get quality. He can get a Telefunken or Grundig for $100 here http://stlouis.craigslist.org/ele/3567821854.html , or I could sell a Magnavox console for the same, but he won't bite in all likelihood.

Scott and I both have decent to good economical deals, but they are priced at market and well above what John wants to spend. These Rogues are very enticing at their price.

Perhaps the guy is a flipper.  I did give him information about Audiocircle and GAS.  I thought it would be an interesting idea to consider.  I am waiting on a Shuguang i12.  I bought it from Grant Fidelity.  It is a 12 Watt EL-84 integrated.  I thought I would take it to Dave's one day and see how it drove the Klipschorns.

Here is an item that you all might find interesting.  It is new to me.

The Orb High-end CRE-2 Cartridge Energiser warms up your phono cartridge by vibrating it with an 800 Hz signal.  This vibration gets the suspension "warmed up" and ready to play.  Here is a link to it.   http://www.analogueseduction.net/category-636/ORB-SFM2[1].html
It is $454.71.

Sorry, I think the link takes you to the stylus force gauge.  Choose Orb in the manufacturer's list.  The CRE-2 is at the top of the page.  www.analogueseduction.net
