mac mini component video out adapter?
« on: 27 Jan 2013, 01:03 pm »
Silly, easy quick question. I have a mac mini core solo, kind of an older one. I am looking at getting a new tv, it only has two HDMI inputs and one component  video input. I use the mini as a server and currently have a DVI to VGA adapter hooked up to the VGA input on my old tv. Can i get just and adapter cable to run from the DVI to component video or do i need some sort of converter box?

Thanks!

I have an older Mac Mini myself, and have successfully used a DVI-HDMI adapter to a new display.

Is that what you mean?

Yes, but I need to go to component video, not HDMI

That audio authority device is $330.00. Not really practical. There are many DVI to component video simple adapter cords, a couple of them are on Amazon for a penny and 6 bucks shipping. if the signal is sort of the same and all it takes are the connectors then I am thinking I should be able to just get one of these adapters to connect the video out from the Mac Mini to the component input of the TV. I don't really care too much about the quality, i will just use the monitor to select tracks for a playlist etc.

Thanks for your replies!

I can report that a simple vga to component adapter cable will not work. Next up I will try a DVI to hdmi adapter cable and run the computer video through my home theater receiver. I just need to be able to select tracks and do simple things with the mac mini. Hopefully this will do the trick.

How are you going to handle audio? Do you anticipate latency issues w audio and video?

Please let us know how your execution works out.

I am using the mac mini strictly as a music server. I use the toslink digital output for stereo sound, only. Oh, I suppose I can get DTS out that was as well, hi rez audio up to 24/96 but not DSD or DVD-A type files. All I need is some sort of video monitor output so i can use a mouse to select tracks and make playlists etc., move files around. I have it all hooked up but haven't tried it yet.

there is one new annoying thing. I just got a very nice Panasonic plasma TV, 55" on sale with a coupon at Costco for $750.00. Seems when I try to select one input for the TV and one for music through my blu ray player the tv causes the inputs to switch along with it. i have to put my hand on the side of the remote so the TV doesn't see the signal.

Also, I have everything plugged into a Monster power conditioner. I am guess the turn on sequence is now not correct, I need to turn everything on and then turn the receiver off and on again to get the Denon link to lock on.

Just going to confirm that using a DVI to HDMI conversion cable I get good video output from the mac mini, into my home theater receiver HDMI input and then from there to the TV. Of course, i don't get audio that way, still using the toslink audio output from the mac mini. all is good.
