Multichannel SS Amp Recomendations for Magnepan HT
« on: 11 Jan 2013, 06:28 pm »
Hey folks - threw this out before, but might have gotten lost for lack of being more specific on subject line.

I'm running a Magnepan based home theater (1.7 front / MMG-C / MMG for sides / MMG-W rear) and looking to replace my Krell Showcase 7 amp.  The processor is a Marantz AV7005 which I got last summer, so don't want to replace that.

I'm looking for something that has comparable or better power, but has a warmer & more liquid sound.  The Krell is just feeling too dry / bright / brittle for my tastes.

I'm considering Parasound Halo (e.g. A51), possibly Anthem, all used.  I'm focusing on SS as it will mostly be used for multichannel home theater, but want something decent enough that will tempt me to listen more for 2 channel stereo.  I've got a tube amp on the side lines awaiting trial for 2 channel audio, so multichannel / HT is more the priority for now.

Any Magnepan owners using SS amps, or those who've had experience, would appreciate your feedback, particularly with respect to multi-channel / home theater use.

Thanks!

Sunfire. I had a 5 channel model that drove 5 Martin Logan speakers. Two were CLS' and the amp never broke a sweat. They are also pretty good sounding.

Look for a Pass Labs X-5.  It will provide great sound, and should have plenty of reserve power.

I am using an A21 for two channels. Magnepan MMG's. I like the sound of this amp...alot. The Anthem Statement M1 is also a very sweet monoblock amp. Five of these would work well.

The only other amps I would consider would be from Bryston, AR, McCormack or Musical Fidelity. This would be if price were not an object.

My two cents...

I have MC2 mc1250 on my 20.1, they are not multichannel, but several will do a great job.

Look for a used B&K. They sound real nice, great price plenty of power and have balanced inputs for the Marantz.

And they come in 7ch so you could biamp the front ch's if you don't have a 7 ch setup.

Good luck.

Jon, Theta or Bryston would be good too.  Some of the Theta amps I believe were originally made by Ayre.
