What Disc reminds you why you are a fanatic?
« on: 8 Jan 2013, 06:01 pm »
Was listening to Natalie Merchant, TigerLilly the other day.  Something about the production, songs, her voice, etc. every time takes me to "that place" that affirms why I am in this hobby in the first place.  You?

A new album from Ben Howard called A New Kingdom is absolutely stellar!!!!

I recommend giving it a listen!! It's on Spotify. Sound is really fine, and every song on the album shines. Great song writing, music, and playing.

Everytime I listen to a historic recording that's been scrubbed and remastered in SACD quality sound.  Today it was Heifetz and his Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto recording.  A little later it was listening to Billie Holiday.

I have the same experience watching the newest blu-ray release/remaster of old movies like Lawrence of Arabia, or the original Star Trek series - they just look so damn good and it increases my enjoyment of them immensely.

+1!  Especially when well-produced on MFSL or similar vinyl!   :thumb:

Do you mean 'Every Kingdom'?    I love the album... came out in late 2011.  I couldn't find anything newer or called 'A New Kingdom'.

Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?

My dad bought it the day it came out and played it over and over for weeks. I was 8 when it came out and 40 years later it's still my favorite album. The MFSL CD remaster is fantastic.

Yeah it has to be Every Kingdom. He only has that album and an EP. Thanks stlrman, I had that on my list to check out. it is good. the studio recording is super tight, but almost a bit too much, though you can hear his talent in the live recordings on the album. Reminds me a bit of James Vincent McMorrow.

BACK TO THE OP:
When I play Cowboy Junkies' The Trinity Session (1988), it makes me appreciate my system and how much effort I've gone through. But I had this CD before I had a good system, so I've heard it in all forms. And it is fairly accessible music to those who aren't familiar with that band.

The Aspen Gold DTD by the Kingston Trio from back in the late 70s, or Sheffield's Wagner DTD album.
While not a big jazz fan, Andre Previn and Pals play West Side Story (MFSL from early 60s) is absolutely spooky.  Spinning it now. :o
Edit:  Belafonte at Carnegie Hall - WOW!
