since you've officially called the prices now: 1000 dollars seems a bit steep for the contents of the external filters for the Signature version, (especially taking into account Sigature model T is simpler than the passive version, and doesn't have these internally anymore. Adding to that the apparent simplicity of the box....) How come this makes for an extra 1000 bucks?

The response has been much more than I expected so it may be a month or so before we have overseas units available. We have about 20 pairs coming for overseas markets at this point.

Its the cost of the specialized parts and the extra parts over the internal crossover  - air core inductors - custom Bryston Caps, custom Bryston circuit board and the cost of an external aluminium box, silk-screening and multiple speaker connections.

Looks like Vegas is going well.

Just wondering:
Noticed the balanced outs on the B17 
Thought the B135 was'nt a balanced design.

How would that work, and what are the advantages, as it has no balanced in's?
Perhaps it only works with the internal DAC module?

It's about $75 in parts there, the box is maybe $50. Connectors are about $25 each. In total no more than $300 for sure.
Since the cabinet is just a cabinet with loudspeakers and no filter that one becomes cheaper, so nice profit there...

No worries though, people are willing to pay $50,000+ for Avalons.

It really bugs me when people accuse us of ripping off our customers - not appreciated one bit.

Not mentioned are the R&D, labor, transport and the close to doubling of the price at the retail store. which makes it about $1000.

Well since we are talking about the xovers. I would have like to seen the same cross overs in the internal model as the signature model. Even if it would've cost the base speakers more. While doing  that and make the external cross over option free. It not just these speakers all the speakers I have seen with this option cost more and I don't know why. You would think that housing the x-overs in the speaker cabinet would cost more to do? Its gotta be easier to install just wire then an entire xover assembly to the cabinet?

Right now though the way they are in cabinet, I would take those in a heart beat.  In  natural like the ones reviewed by Inner ear. I look at the speakers the way I look at the BDA2 in  cost. Expensive but way cheaper than whats out there and you get more. These speakers could go up in price.

The whole idea of keeping the crossover external to the speaker is to allow the customer to upgrade to a fully active system using the dedicated Bryston AX-1 crossover.   Also as the crossover in a speaker is used at high levels they can heatup and there crossover values can change due to the heat - keeping the crossover external helps reduce this affect.

Talking about rip-offs, this was a missed opportunity. For a couple extra dollars one could get "non-inductive Ayrton Perry power resistors".... not that they would do anything for this design, but those words would look so good in the flyer.... that they might justify some extra hundred dollars from the die hard audiophile.... Say James how about offering them as an "upgrade"?

Bryston/Thiel Demo CES 2013





THIEL showed up to CES 2013 with two new products, the CS2.7 (well, it’s kind of new) and CS1.7 (this one is brand new) loudspeakers. Although they were only showing off two new products, they proudly displayed a whole host of products, including the PowerPoint 1.2 in-ceiling speakers, CS3.7 floorstanding speakers, and SS2.2 subwoofer.

CS2.7

The CS2.7 is a three-way coherent source loudspeaker and sits in the middle of their floorstanding speaker lineup. It builds on THIEL’s heritage of time and phase coherence technologies and coaxial driver designs. Many of the technologies featured in the CS2.7 have actually trickled down from the flagship CS3.7 floorstanding speaker. The tweeter is a 1” aluminum dome design and sits in the place of a phase plug or dust cap on the 4.5” aluminum star-diaphragm midrange driver. This is referred to as a coaxial design, and can have many advantages such as smoother off-axis response and a more seamless tweeter/midrange transition. An 8” active bass driver and racetrack-shaped passive radiator provide the bass for the CS2.7 and allow it to play down to 35Hz. We were able to sit down for a brief demo and enjoyed every second of it.

The speakers were detailed and well integrated with the sub. Our only regret is that we didn't have more time to listen (a few more hours would have done nicely). The CS2.7 is shipping now with an MSRP of $9900 per pair.
